What does dull skin actually look like?
Dullness is a broad visual description, which gives a cosmetics counter plenty of room to interpret it. Skin color, surface roughness and translucency, meaning how light passes through skin, all contribute to that impression. It is not simply a lack of shine.1
| Feature | Dull looking skin | Glowing looking skin |
|---|---|---|
| Radiance | Appears less radiant | Appears radiant |
| Texture | Can look rough or uneven | Looks smooth |
| Color | Discoloration can contribute to dullness | Even coloration contributes to perceived skin quality |
In research involving 50 Japanese women, color related features contributed more to perceived dullness than glossiness. Glossiness is only part of the picture, so a shiny finish is not a certificate of radiance. Aging can also bring reduced hydration, roughness, dullness and blotchy color.12
What should you do about dull looking skin?
- 1Wash gently. If skin is dry or irritated, choose a cleanser without fragrance. Everyday soaps can dry skin out.
- 2Moisturize after washing while skin is still damp. Moisturizer adds moisture and reduces water loss, helping skin stay soft and smooth. Smooth an emollient gently onto skin rather than rubbing it in.
- 3Protect skin during the day. Use broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, seek shade and wear sun protective clothing. Sun protection matters for every skin tone.
- 4Leave dry, peeling skin alone. Exfoliating it can strip away more moisture; moisturize instead.
Which moisturizer should you choose?
For dry skin, choose a cream or ointment rather than a lighter lotion. For oily skin, consider a light gel; combination skin can need moisturizer only on dry areas. Avoid fragrance if skin is dry or sensitive. Creams work well during the day, while greasy ointments suit very dry skin and nighttime use.34
For excessively dry skin, use a suitable moisturizer at least twice daily. Emollients can also replace lost moisture whenever skin feels dry or tight. If you use a steroid cream or another prescribed skin treatment, leave 20 to 30 minutes between that treatment and an emollient, and ask your doctor which goes first.34
When does skin need medical attention?
See a dermatologist if dryness does not improve or becomes painful, cracked, bleeding or very irritating. Persistent burning or stinging, inflamed hair follicles or a new facial rash after an emollient also warrant advice from a doctor or pharmacist. Keep emollients away from flames and cigarettes: residue on clothing and bedding makes fabrics easier to ignite.34
