What does a cleansing balm do?

In a double cleansing routine, an oil based cleanser helps break down makeup, sunscreen residue and excess skin oil, also called sebum. This can be particularly useful for waterproof makeup and waterproof sunscreen. The water based cleanser that follows removes water soluble material such as sweat and dirt.2

How do you use it in your routine?

  1. 1Follow your jar's directions for the amount to use and whether to begin with dry or damp skin.
  2. 2Massage gently with your fingertips to loosen makeup and sunscreen residue. Do not scrub or use a rough sponge.
  3. 3Rinse with lukewarm water rather than hot water.
  4. 4If you are double cleansing, leave your face damp and gently apply a water based cleanser. Rinse again.
  5. 5Pat dry with a soft towel. Apply moisturizer if your skin feels dry or itchy.

Do you need to use it morning and night?

Put makeup removal in your evening routine, before bed. General face washing advice is once in the morning and once at night, plus after heavy sweating; that does not mean using a balm and a second cleanser every time. If your skin is dry or sensitive, a water rinse in the morning and a cleanser at night can be enough. If you wash only once a day, make it the evening wash.134

Is a second cleanser always necessary?

No. Most people can clean their face adequately with one thorough wash using a gentle cleanser. Consider double cleansing when waterproof makeup or sunscreen makes removal difficult, rather than adding it automatically. Removing makeup is the purpose of the extra step, not increasing the population of your bathroom shelf. Washing twice can cause dryness and irritation, so skip the extra cleanse when one wash does the job.2

What if your skin is dry or sensitive?

Choose gentle cleansers without fragrance and avoid formulas that leave your skin excessively dry. For the second step, a gentle, unscented cream cleanser is less drying than a foaming cleanser. If cleansing leaves your skin dry or irritated, switch to a gentler cleanser or use a thicker moisturizer. More washing can damage the skin barrier, the protective outer layer of your skin.12

Can a cleansing balm cause breakouts?

An oil based cleanser can cause breakouts in acne prone skin, especially when used alone. For acne prone skin, look for cleansers labelled oil free, won't clog pores or noncomedogenic, which means formulated not to clog pores. An oil free makeup remover followed by a gentle cleanser is another option. Stop using a product that is causing breakouts rather than trying to wash the problem away more aggressively. If the cause is unclear or acne continues, a dermatologist can help identify what is contributing.24

How long should you massage it?

There is no universal face washing time, including a compulsory 60 second rule. Follow any timing directions on your jar and focus on gentle makeup removal rather than prolonged rubbing. General cleansing time depends on the cleanser, your skin type and how much needs removing.1
