What are enlarged pores?
Enlarged pores are visible depressions in the skin containing openings through which oil and sweat reach the surface. They are part of the skin's structure, rather than something that needs removing. Pores carry oil and sweat to the surface, so deleting them would be a rather committed approach to skincare. Enlarged pores occur at all ages and in all ethnic groups, and often become more apparent with age.13
Why are pores more noticeable on the nose?
The center of the face has more oil producing glands, which makes pores there more prominent. Genetics sets much of their size, while excess oil, hair follicle size, products that clog pores, sun damage and loss of skin elasticity can contribute to enlargement. Collagen and elastin are proteins that support the skin; losing them with age or sun damage allows pores to widen. Hormonal changes can also increase oil production, and pore size can fluctuate during the menstrual cycle.13
Are enlarged pores the same as blackheads?
An enlarged pore describes a visible opening; a blackhead describes a plug inside a follicle opening. Blackheads are a type of acne, also called open comedones. They can appear grey, orange, brown or black, so colour alone does not tell the whole story. Whiteheads are closed comedones and appear as uninflamed, skin coloured bumps. Blackheads can sit within enlarged pores, but the two terms are not interchangeable. Shallow holes left after acne can also be scars rather than enlarged pores.3456
How should you care for nose pores each day?
- 1Wash your face morning and evening with a gentle cleanser. Use warm water rather than hot water, and wash without scrubbing.
- 2Use a moisturizer suited to your skin, morning and night. An oily nose does not mean the rest of your face needs products for oily skin.
- 3Apply broad spectrum, water resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher during the day, including cold or rainy days.
- 4Remove makeup at the end of the day. Look for skincare and makeup labelled noncomedogenic, meaning designed not to clog pores.
When does salicylic acid help?
Salicylic acid can unclog pores, making it an option when enlarged nose pores come with blackheads or acne. Some salicylic acid cleansers are gentle enough for daily use. If a cleanser causes dryness or irritation, alternate it with a mild cleanser, using the mild cleanser in the morning and salicylic acid before bed. Blackheads can also be treated with salicylic acid creams or prescription tretinoin, and a dermatologist can remove them. Persistent acne sometimes needs more than a pore clearing cleanser.24
When is retinol worth considering?
Retinol helps clear dead skin cells and unclog pores, and increases collagen production. It is an option for pores that look larger alongside oiliness, mild acne or reduced skin firmness. Apply a thin layer at night, starting twice a week and increasing gradually as tolerated. Waiting 30 minutes after washing before applying can reduce irritation. Retinol increases sun sensitivity, so daytime sun protection matters. Do not use retinol or retinyl palmitate while pregnant or breastfeeding.12
What if your nose is oily but your cheeks are dry?
An oily forehead, nose and chin with dry cheeks is a common pattern of combination skin. Different areas can need different care, so you do not have to treat dry cheeks as though they share your nose's oil production. For dry areas, choose a gentle cleanser and a moisturizer containing humectants, ingredients that draw moisture into the skin. Sensitive skin can also be oily or combination. If products regularly cause redness, itching, burning or dryness, avoid fragrances, dyes and harsh ingredients; salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide can irritate sensitive skin. Look for fragrance free products rather than choosing solely by an oily skin label.7
What should you avoid?
Do not squeeze, pick or dig into nose pores. Scrubbing and squeezing can cause irritation that makes pores more visible, and extraction tools can harm skin and cause scarring. Exfoliation can help their appearance, but aggressive treatment is not the goal. If you are unsure whether exfoliation suits your skin, a dermatologist can help you choose an approach.2
What results should you expect?
Expect less noticeable pores, not permanent removal. Treatments aimed specifically at preventing or shrinking enlarged pores have limited effectiveness. Ice and chilled rollers produce tightening that lasts only a few minutes, while red light devices are not an established treatment for reducing pore size. A magnifying mirror turns pores into the main event, even though other people do not inspect your face at that distance.13
Can a dermatologist do more?
A dermatologist can assess whether clogging, acne or loss of firmness is the main concern. Options include prescription topical retinoids, chemical peels, laser treatment and radiofrequency microneedling, which combines skin needling with radiofrequency energy. Some oral acne treatments can also help pore appearance, but these are treatments to discuss with a clinician, not medicines to start for visible pores alone. Professional microneedling stimulates collagen production. Laser resurfacing can give a more noticeable, longer lasting change than some home treatments and typically involves a series of appointments four to eight weeks apart.13
When should you get medical help?
See a doctor if accompanying acne is not improving with treatment, is widespread, causes deep painful spots or leaves scars. Get medical advice for hot, swollen or red skin that could signal infection; redness can be harder to see on brown and black skin. Acne affecting your mental health is also a reason to seek help.6
