What does exfoliating actually do?
Removing a dull surface layer can make skin look brighter and feel smoother. Physical exfoliation can help unclog pores a little; chemical exfoliation can also improve acne and uneven pigmentation near the surface. Home exfoliation is not a fix for wrinkles.2
Should you use a scrub or an acid?
| Method | How it works | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Physical exfoliation | A washcloth, scrub, brush or sponge removes cells through friction. | Pressure matters. Harsh scrubbing can inflame skin and worsen inflammatory acne. |
| Chemical exfoliation | Acids dissolve excess dead surface cells. | Start with lower concentrations of hydroxy acids or salicylic acid, rather than a strong treatment. |
An alpha or beta hydroxy acid cleanser is one option for mild acid exfoliation. Glycolic acid and salicylic acid also appear in professional peels, but a peel and an everyday cleanser are different treatments. Professional salicylic acid peels can penetrate hair follicles and exfoliate inside pores. A clinician should select a peel for your concerns rather than treating every acid product as interchangeable.3
Choose the method for your skin
- Dry or sensitive skin needs a mild approach. Strong physical exfoliation can be too irritating.
- Skin prone to acne often does better with mild chemical exfoliation than aggressive scrubbing.
- Oily, thicker skin can tolerate stronger methods, but stronger is not the starting point.
- Darker skin, or skin that develops dark marks after irritation, needs extra caution with aggressive exfoliation because it can increase pigmentation.
Sensitive skin tends to sting or burn after products. Dry skin is flaky, itchy or rough; oily skin looks shiny and greasy. Combination skin has both dry and oily areas. If those descriptions do not make the choice clear, a dermatologist can help decide whether exfoliating would benefit you.1
How to exfoliate your face
- 1Check your skin first. Skip exfoliation over open cuts, wounds or sunburn, including any shaving cuts.
- 2Choose one mild method. An exfoliating cleanser can serve as the cleansing step rather than adding another wash.
- 3Apply gently. For a scrub or rinse off exfoliator, use small circular motions for about 30 seconds, then rinse with lukewarm water. Use short, light strokes with a brush or sponge.
- 4Apply moisturizer immediately afterward.
- 5Finish your morning routine with sunscreen before going outdoors.
For a basic morning routine, the order is cleansing, moisturizer, then sunscreen. A cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen cover the basics, without turning the bathroom into a stockroom. Choose sunscreen with protection against both UVA and UVB rays, SPF 30 or higher, and water resistance. Exfoliation can increase your risk of sunburn, so sun protection belongs alongside it.245
How often should men exfoliate?
Do not make exfoliation a daily task. Keep it to two or three times a week at most, allowing skin to recover between sessions. That is a ceiling, not a quota: the more aggressive the method, the less often you should use it. Redness and irritation mean the routine is too much, not that you need to push through.12
For a first attempt, a simple washcloth can show how your skin responds to mild physical exfoliation. Gentle chemical exfoliation is another option, with lower acid concentrations before stronger ones. Increase strength only if needed. Acid concentration and rubbing pressure both affect irritation; more intensity does not automatically make a better routine.2
Check what you already use
Prescription retinoid creams, retinol and benzoyl peroxide can already make skin sensitive or cause peeling. Adding exfoliation can worsen dryness or breakouts. If you use these products, review the combination with your dermatologist before adding an exfoliant. Vitamin C serums can also interact poorly with chemical exfoliants such as alpha hydroxy acids. Do not assume several useful ingredients must be useful together.14
Stop using a product if irritation develops and arrange a dermatologist appointment. Excessive exfoliation can cause irritant contact dermatitis, an irritated rash that looks red and chapped. Introduce fewer new products, test them before regular use, and avoid heavily fragranced formulas. Scrubbing harder is especially unhelpful during an acne flare because it can worsen the inflammation.245
Can you exfoliate your body too?
Exfoliation can improve flaking and rough texture on the arms and legs. These areas often become drier with age. For keratosis pilaris, a common harmless condition causing rough bumps on the upper arms or thighs, physical exfoliation or a cleanser or lotion containing a chemical exfoliant can improve appearance. The tougher skin on these areas tolerates physical methods better than facial skin.2
When is a professional peel worth discussing?
Persistent pigmentation or clogged pores are reasons to discuss a professional chemical peel rather than keep increasing home exfoliation. Superficial peels use ingredients such as glycolic or salicylic acid and remove thin surface layers. The first treatment can give a modest result, with clearer improvement after repeated treatments. Darker skin requires careful assessment because peels carry greater risks of pigment changes and scarring.26
Recovery depends on peel depth. Redness and occasional swelling after a superficial peel usually settle within 48 hours. A medium depth peel produces more marked peeling, inflammation and swelling, often requiring about a week away from work; mild redness can last several weeks. Follow the clinician's aftercare, moisturize, avoid picking, and protect treated skin from the sun, especially for the first six months. Report problems promptly.6
