Do men need a different retinol?

Men's skin tends to have a thicker deeper layer, and testosterone can make skin oilier, but skin type matters more than sex when choosing skincare. Choose retinol for your skin type and goal rather than a men's label, because the packaging does not get a vote. Shaving, dryness and sensitivity are more useful things to consider than whether the bottle looks suitably serious.2

What does retinol do?

Retinol is a form of vitamin A and belongs to the retinoid family. Retinol increases skin cell turnover, helps keep pores clear and increases collagen production. Collagen is a structural protein that helps give skin its firmness. The practical targets are rough texture, uneven pigmentation, mild acne and fine lines. Retinol is not a reliable treatment for deep, sunken or raised acne scars.123

Which retinoid should you choose?

OptionMain useWhat changes
RetinolUneven tone, texture and fine linesAvailable without a prescription; less potent and generally less irritating than tretinoin.
AdapaleneAcneAvailable without a prescription at 0.1% in the US, with prescription formulations also available.
TretinoinAcne and fine wrinklesPrescription treatment; stronger wrinkle effects than retinol, with directions set by your prescriber.

For mild texture changes or early fine lines, start with the least intense retinol formula you can find. There is no standard requirement for every over the counter product to disclose its retinol percentage, so missing numbers make comparison harder. Creams, lotions and serums can all contain retinol, so the bottle's job title is not a qualification. For acne as the main problem, consider an acne retinoid such as adapalene rather than choosing solely by an antiaging claim.13

How to start retinol at night

  1. 1Test a little retinol on a small area first. Wait a couple of days and check for marked redness or itching before applying it more widely.
  2. 2Wash with a gentle cleanser and pat your skin dry. Do not scrub.
  3. 3Follow the package directions. General retinol guidance is a pea sized amount in a thin layer over the face, keeping it out of your eyes, mouth and nose.
  4. 4Finish with a facial moisturizer. If you are prone to acne, choose one labeled noncomedogenic, meaning formulated not to clog pores.
  5. 5Start every other night, or once every few days if you need a slower introduction. Gradually build toward nightly use as your skin tolerates it.
14

Use retinol at bedtime rather than adding a morning application. Prescription tretinoin has its own instructions: use only the amount and frequency prescribed. Applying more often is not the way to accelerate treatment.25

What belongs in the morning routine?

Retinoids increase sensitivity to sunlight. Use moisturizer and a broad spectrum, water resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Cover exposed areas, including your ears, neck and scalp, before going outdoors. Reapply every two hours outdoors and immediately after swimming or sweating. Shade, protective clothing and a hat add protection. Sensitive skin can benefit from a sunscreen containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.36

How should you handle shaving?

Reduce shaving irritation rather than adding more drying products. Wet your skin and hair first, use moisturizing shaving cream, and shave in the direction of hair growth. If close shaving causes bumps or razor burn, try a razor with one or two blades and avoid stretching the skin. Rinse the blade after each swipe and replace it after five to seven shaves. Apply a gentle moisturizer afterward. Alcohol based aftershaves can dry and irritate skin; moisturizer is more helpful for most people.26

What can you use alongside retinol?

A gentle cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen are the supporting routine. Ceramides help replenish the skin's protective barrier, while hyaluronic acid helps retain water. For sensitive skin, choose fragrance free products; an unscented product can still contain masking fragrance. If you use prescription tretinoin, ask your prescriber before adding other topical medicines, especially benzoyl peroxide, hair removers or salicylic acid treatments. Also avoid shaving lotions and other products containing lots of alcohol or menthol.256

How long does retinol take to work?

Visible changes take several weeks, and dark spots or fine lines can take months. Acne can initially look worse, with pimples continuing during the first couple of months. For topical retinoids, wrinkle improvement commonly takes three to six months, with the best results taking six to twelve months. Those timings are general retinoid guidance, not a deadline for every retinol formula.14

Continued use is needed to maintain retinoid benefits, so the bottle is a recurring appointment rather than a completed renovation. Prescription tretinoin can reduce fine wrinkles, but it does not remove them or repair sun damaged skin.45

Who should be careful, and when should you get help?

Retinol can cause dryness, redness, peeling, itching or burning. Marked dryness, skin allergies or existing redness and inflammation make retinoids a poor starting choice without dermatology advice. In darker skin, irritation can trigger dark marks, called hyperpigmentation. Start slowly and use moisturizer. Do not use retinoids during pregnancy. If breastfeeding or planning pregnancy, discuss prescription tretinoin with your clinician.135

With tretinoin, report severe or persistent irritation to your doctor; rash, hives or pain at the treatment area need an immediate call. Do not apply tretinoin to sunburned skin or areas affected by eczema. Get medical help for acne that is not improving, deep or painful spots, scarring, hot swollen skin, or acne affecting your mental health. A new or changing spot that itches, bleeds or changes color needs assessment, not treatment as an ordinary dark mark.567
