Which eye wrinkles are you treating?

Crow's feet are the small lines at the outer corners of your eyes. They start with repeated muscle contractions during facial expressions, often appearing first when you smile or squint. Over time, they can remain visible when your face is at rest. Aging also reduces collagen and elastin, the proteins that help skin stay plump and stretchy. Sun exposure contributes to their development. Dryness adds another concern: moisturizing can soften the appearance of fine lines without treating the muscle movement behind crow's feet.234

Is retinol better than prescription treatment?

Retinoids are vitamin A based treatments and are among the most studied ingredients for aging skin. They reduce wrinkles by increasing collagen production. Retinol sold without a prescription is weaker and generally less irritating than tretinoin, a prescription retinoid, but is also less effective at reducing wrinkles. Retinol still improves the appearance of skin aged by sun exposure. If an ordinary retinol product is not giving you the improvement you want, discuss prescription options and application around the eyes with a dermatologist rather than choosing a stronger treatment yourself.35

Choose ingredients for your main concern and a price you can comfortably pay. Expensive eye cream is not automatically more effective, even when the packaging looks ready to accept an award.1

How do you apply eye cream?

  1. 1Wash your face with a gentle cleanser and gently pat dry.
  2. 2Apply your treatment after cleansing. Follow the eye cream's directions for the amount and where to apply it; more product is not a better dose.
  3. 3Use a small amount and gently pat around the eyes with your ring finger. Avoid pulling or tugging the skin.
  4. 4Apply moisturizer and, during the day, sunscreen. Apply makeup afterwards if you use it.

For retinoids, general guidance is to begin every other night and gradually work toward nightly use as tolerated. Follow your product's directions or your prescriber's instructions rather than applying that schedule to every eye cream. Retinoids can cause dryness and irritation and increase sensitivity to sunlight, so daytime sunscreen belongs alongside the nighttime treatment. Their benefits require continued use.5

How long does eye cream take to work?

A moisturizer can immediately plump fine lines. Most products for signs of aging need at least six weeks, and some need three months. Retinoid treatment takes longer: visible wrinkle improvement generally takes three to six months of regular use, with the best results taking six to twelve months. Judge hydration and wrinkle treatment on different timelines. An immediate smoother appearance from moisturizing is not the same process as the gradual collagen changes from a retinoid.25

What if your eye area is sensitive?

Skin around the eyes is particularly thin and easily becomes dry or irritated. Strongly scented creams can irritate and dry this area. Sensitive skin is more likely to react to wrinkle treatments, and retinol irritation is more likely when you first start or use higher concentrations. Possible reactions include itching, peeling, redness, puffiness and scaly patches. For dryness, consider moisturizing ingredients before adding a stronger wrinkle treatment.13

Before facial use, test a small amount on your inner forearm twice daily for four to five days, including products labeled "hypoallergenic." No reaction makes facial use more likely to be tolerated. Stop a nonprescription product that stings or burns. If a prescribed treatment causes these symptoms, follow your dermatologist's instructions. Avoid stacking several products for aging skin: irritation can make signs of aging more noticeable.2

What helps prevent more eye wrinkles?

Use broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher every day on uncovered skin. You can use your facial sunscreen around the eyes or a product designed for that area. Reapply at least every two hours outdoors, and more often when swimming, sweating or towel drying. Sunglasses and a wide brimmed hat help shield the eyes; sunglasses also reduce squinting. Avoid tanning, which exposes skin to UV rays that accelerate aging.1234

Does an antiaging label mean it has been tested?

Many wrinkle creams are sold as cosmetics without required human testing, so "antiaging" is a sales category, not a clinical result. In the United States, cosmetics do not need FDA approval before sale. Treat a promise on the packaging differently from an ingredient with an established role in wrinkle care.4

When should you consider a dermatologist?

If deeper crow's feet remain bothersome despite skincare, a dermatologist can discuss treatments beyond cream. Botulinum toxin injections reduce muscle contractions such as those involved in squinting. Other options include prescription topical treatment and professional chemical peels. Injections have risks, including swelling, pain and drooping eyelids, so discuss suitability and side effects before deciding. You can also seek help when the appearance of these lines is affecting your confidence.3
