What does heartleaf actually do?

Your skin barrier is the outer layer of skin, where cells and natural fats help keep water in and harmful substances out. Harsh soaps, excessive exfoliation and skipping moisturizer can damage it. Dryness, flaking, rough patches and stinging when you apply skincare are possible signs of damage.2

Heartleaf is the plant extract Houttuynia cordata. Its compounds include quercetin, which is associated with reduced inflammatory signaling. Laboratory testing also found that heartleaf extract inhibited hyaluronidase, an enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid, which helps skin hold water. Those mechanisms make heartleaf a plausible hydration and soothing ingredient, rather than a complete barrier repair treatment.1

Should you add a heartleaf product?

Heartleaf is worth considering when redness, dehydration and oily congestion overlap. Choose the finished formula, not just the ingredient on the front: extraction method, concentration, supporting ingredients and texture all matter. A heartleaf routine does not require a matching cleanser, toner and cream; the plant does not need to occupy every shelf.1

If dryness and barrier damage are your main concerns, prioritize a moisturizer containing ceramides or fatty acids, which are naturally present in the barrier. Heartleaf supports hydration while moisturizer helps reduce water loss, so adding a toner does not give the cream early retirement.12

How to use heartleaf in a barrier routine

  1. 1Test a new heartleaf product on a small area before applying it widely. Introduce only one new product at a time.
  2. 2Cleanse gently with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance free, soap free cleanser. Massage it on, then rinse without prolonged rubbing.
  3. 3If you choose a heartleaf toner or serum, apply it after cleansing and before moisturizer. Morning or evening use can fit a routine; introduce it slowly rather than adding several new active products together.
  4. 4Apply moisturizer after cleansing. For contact dermatitis, apply a tolerated fragrance free moisturizer while skin is still damp and reapply when skin feels dry.
  5. 5Finish your morning routine with sunscreen and use it daily.

What should you expect?

Barrier recovery takes patience: benefits from consistent barrier care can take three to four months to become noticeable. That is a general routine timescale, not a heartleaf product schedule. If you use retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, exfoliating acids or prescription acne care, introduce heartleaf slowly and keep the rest of your routine stable for several days.12

When should you stop or get help?

Stop using a product that causes a rash or irritation. An allergic reaction can develop even after years of use, and a reaction can appear hours or days after exposure. See a dermatologist for raw, irritated skin or a rash that blisters, returns or causes discomfort. For dyshidrotic eczema, which affects the hands or feet, prioritize a fragrance free cream or ointment rather than lotion; heartleaf is not a substitute for condition specific care.34
