These directions cover Relief Sun SPF50+ PA++++, sold under both Rice + Probiotics and Rice + Niacinamide names. The formula and size are unchanged, so the packaging has had a name change rather than a career change.2
Is two fingers of sunscreen enough?
Two finger lengths are a practical guide for the face: squeeze sunscreen along your index and middle fingers, from the base to the tips. The measured face amount is at least one teaspoon. If you want a measured amount rather than a visual estimate, use the teaspoon. Do not spread that face allowance over your neck, ears and every other exposed area as well.13
For wider coverage, most adults need at least about one ounce to cover skin not protected by clothing, with more needed depending on body size. For an entire body application, UK guidance gives a range of six to eight teaspoons. Neither amount is a face dose: the amount you need depends on how much skin you are covering.14
How should I apply Relief Sun?
- 1Finish your morning skincare first. Beauty of Joseon directs you to apply Relief Sun as the last skincare step.
- 2Apply generously and spread evenly over your face, adding sunscreen for your exposed neck and ears. Rub the sunscreen thoroughly into your skin.
- 3Check easily missed areas, including your nose, hairline and the back of your neck. Avoid getting sunscreen in your eyes or mouth, and use an SPF lip balm on your lips.
- 4Apply before going outdoors. General sunscreen guidance gives a lead time of 15 minutes before sun exposure.
If you plan to stay outside long enough to risk burning, UK guidance calls for two applications: one 30 minutes before leaving and another just before going out. Cover all exposed skin rather than only the areas that usually burn. Cloudy weather and winter do not remove the need for sun protection outdoors.14
Can I use less because it is SPF50+?
No. SPF testing uses a sunscreen layer of 2 milligrams per square centimetre of skin. Applying too little can leave you with less protection than the stated SPF. SPF describes protection against a dose of ultraviolet radiation, not a fixed number of safe hours outdoors. A higher SPF does not replace a generous application or regular reapplication.56
How much should I use when reapplying?
Reapply generously over the exposed areas, rather than using a smaller touch up amount. Beauty of Joseon directs reapplication at least every two hours. Reapply sooner after swimming, sweating or towel drying, and whenever sunscreen has rubbed off. For swimming or sweaty activities, choose a water resistant sunscreen, as Beauty of Joseon directs. Water resistant sunscreen still needs reapplication after water exposure.24
What if the full amount feels too rich?
Adjust the moisturizer underneath rather than reducing your sunscreen amount. Beauty of Joseon advises dry, dehydrated or normal skin to use moisturizer underneath, while combination skin can add it if needed. For oily skin, the brand suggests skipping a separate moisturizer. Relief Sun is designed to feel like a creamy moisturizer, so a separate cream does not need to attend every application.2
Keep the tube out of excessive heat and direct sunlight, and check its expiry date. A generous application is only one part of sun protection: use shade, protective clothing, a hat and sunglasses too.35
