What would a homemade formula need?

Micellar water contains purified water, moisturizers and micelles, tiny clusters of cleansing molecules that lift dirt, oil and makeup. Those ingredient categories explain how the cleanser works; they are not mixing instructions. Do not turn them into guessed quantities or an assumed storage life.2

Making cosmetics at home is legal in the United States, but homemade products still need to be safe. Cosmetics do not have to be sterile. They do need protection from harmful contamination, and the manufacturing environment and packaging both matter.3

A toner has a different role and is generally used after cleansing, not as a substitute for removing grime.2

Why a clean bottle is not enough

Bacteria and fungi can enter cosmetics through water, other ingredients, poor manufacturing conditions, packaging or handling. An ineffective preservation system can allow contamination, too. Contaminated cosmetics can cause serious infections, including products used around the eyes. Keeping the container clean addresses only one part of that problem.1

For a finished micellar water:

  • Do not dilute it with water. Added water can introduce microorganisms and weaken the preservatives.
  • Store it as the manufacturer directs. Warm or damp conditions can encourage microbial growth.
  • Keep the container clean, wash your hands before application and do not share the product.
  • Stop using a product that develops a bad smell or other signs of contamination. Report suspected cosmetic problems to FDA.

How to use finished micellar water

It is generally suitable for dry or sensitive skin. Use it in the morning, before bed, or both; it usually does not need rinsing.2

  1. 1Apply a small amount to your hands, a cotton pad or a reusable microfiber cloth.
  2. 2Gently massage it over your face.
  3. 3Follow with a gentle oil or water based cleanser when removing sunscreen or cosmetics, especially heavy or waterproof makeup.
  4. 4Apply your usual treatments, then moisturizer. Finish with sunscreen in the morning.
