Test the masque before using it on your face

Test a new masque on a small area before a full face application. Apply your usual amount and thickness to a spot about the size of a quarter on the underside of your arm or the bend of your elbow, twice daily for seven to 10 days. Leave each application on only as long as the label directs, then remove it if instructed. This testing schedule is for the small test spot, not a recommendation to mask your whole face twice daily. If the spot becomes red, itchy or swollen, wash the product off and do not use it again.3

How to apply the masque

  1. 1Wash your face with a gentle cleanser and warm water to remove makeup, dirt and residue.
  2. 2Apply the masque as its label directs. For a spreadable mask, use your fingertips and apply gently.
  3. 3Leave the masque on for the stated time. Do not extend the session to try to get a stronger result.
  4. 4Remove the masque using the label's method. Apply moisturizer after washing off a washable mask.
  5. 5If you use the masque during your morning routine, finish your skincare with sunscreen.

How often should you use it?

Use the frequency printed on your masque's label rather than assuming that a soothing mask belongs in every daily routine. Using masks too often or leaving them on longer than intended can cause irritation. For a sheet masque, do not assume daily use is necessary; a Korean skincare routine can include sheet masks without using them every day.24

What should you expect?

Facial masks can provide an immediate boost in hydration or appearance, but the effect can be temporary. Choose the formula for your needs rather than expecting the centella name alone to settle the decision. A more expensive mask is not necessarily better, even if the price makes it sound like an appointment.12

A masque supplements cleansing, moisturizing and sun protection; it does not replace them, however much ceremony the packaging suggests. Introduce one new product at a time rather than changing your whole routine alongside the masque. That makes it easier to identify which addition helps and which causes trouble.14

What if you have sensitive skin or use treatments?

Read the full ingredient list, not just the soothing claim. Avoid fragrance, essential oils and rubbing alcohol in facial masks, and avoid strong exfoliating ingredients if your skin is sensitive. If you already use retinol or acids, avoid a mask that duplicates those active ingredients. Prescription and nonprescription medicines can also make skin more sensitive; ask your dermatologist about compatibility if your treatment affects skin sensitivity. A masque is not a replacement for acne or eczema treatment.12

When should you wash it off or get help?

Wash the masque off immediately if it causes itching, burning or stinging. Stop using it if you develop a reaction. A cool compress or petroleum jelly can help relieve irritated skin.23

Watch for delayed reactions too: an allergic rash often appears 24 to 48 hours after exposure, and an allergy can develop after years of tolerating a product. Contact dermatitis, a skin reaction to a substance, can cause itching, blisters, dryness and cracking. See a doctor for persistent, recurring or severe symptoms. Seek medical advice if the area becomes tender, warm or increasingly red, or you develop a fever.56
