Check which gel you have
Benzoyl peroxide is especially useful for mild pimples. Start with a low strength; 2.5% is a sensible starting option. Salicylic acid unclogs pores and works best on whiteheads and blackheads. Retinoids such as adapalene are not spot treatments: apply them across the whole area affected by acne, rather than only to individual pimples.23
How to apply a gel that stays on
- 1For first use of benzoyl peroxide, apply a small amount to one or two small treatment areas for three days. If there is no reaction or discomfort, continue as directed.
- 2Wash your hands, gently cleanse the affected skin and pat it dry. Do not scrub.
- 3Apply a thin layer to the treatment area specified on the packet or prescription label. Gently rub in benzoyl peroxide gel and leave it to absorb.
- 4Wash your hands afterwards. Keep benzoyl peroxide away from your eyes, nose and mouth, and do not apply it to infected skin, cuts or grazes.
For ongoing acne treatment, a thin layer across acne prone skin treats existing acne and helps prevent new breakouts. The name 'spot gel' suggests a very small assignment, but preventing the next breakout takes a wider brief.3
If your benzoyl peroxide product is a gel wash, wet the area, wash with a small amount for one to two minutes, then rinse and pat dry. A wash is not a gel to leave on overnight.1
How often, and where in your routine?
Benzoyl peroxide is usually used once or twice daily; start once daily to check your skin's reaction. Some 5% gels also have once or twice daily directions. Do not increase the amount or frequency beyond your product's instructions. If you miss a dose, do not double the next one.45
General skincare order puts salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide spot treatment after cleansing and before moisturizer, with sunscreen last in the morning. Cleanser, treatment, moisturizer and morning sunscreen give each product a job, without turning the bathroom shelf into a committee. Follow any specific layering restrictions on your medicine's label. Only combine benzoyl peroxide with other acne treatments when a doctor or pharmacist approves.146
How long does spot gel take to work?
Expect weeks, not overnight clearing. Benzoyl peroxide can take four to six weeks to show effects. With effective acne medication, fewer breakouts generally appear within four to eight weeks, and clearing can take 16 weeks. Use one treatment consistently rather than adding another during the first six to eight weeks. Seek advice if acne worsens, or if benzoyl peroxide has not helped after four to six weeks; do not wait beyond 12 weeks without improvement.134
When to stop or get help
Benzoyl peroxide can cause dryness, peeling and mild stinging. Using it less often can help mild dryness or peeling; ask a pharmacist if symptoms persist. Stop and seek prompt medical advice for burning, blistering, swelling or a rash. Difficulty breathing, throat tightness, faintness or swelling of the face, lips or tongue needs emergency help. Benzoyl peroxide can bleach hair and fabrics.14
Ask a clinician before treating acne during pregnancy or while trying to conceive. Benzoyl peroxide can usually be used during pregnancy, but check first; breastfeeding also needs advice. Children under 12 need medical advice before using it. See a doctor for deep, painful spots, scarring, hot or swollen skin, or acne affecting your mental health. Do not pick or squeeze spots.1347
