Which centella product should you use?

For hydration and soothing, choose a product that stays on your skin, such as a serum, cream or lotion. Centella helps the skin barrier retain moisture and reduces redness and inflammation, making it useful for dry and sensitive skin. Centella also appears under names such as cica, tiger grass and gotu kola. Those names refer to the same plant, not three extra steps your bathroom needs to accommodate.2

Apply your products in this order

  1. 1Test before applying it to your face. Put the centella product on a small area of your inner arm and wait at least 24 hours to check for a reaction.
  2. 2Cleanse gently. Wash your face with a gentle cleanser, then gently pat your skin dry. Cleansing comes before treatments, moisturizer and sunscreen.
  3. 3Apply medication or treatment. Skin medication belongs directly after cleansing. A centella serum used as a cosmetic treatment also belongs in the treatment stage, before moisturizer. This is general layering guidance, not a specific product's application directions.
  4. 4Apply moisturizer. If you chose a centella cream or moisturizing lotion, use it here rather than treating it as an extra serum step. The product's role determines its place in the routine.
  5. 5Apply sunscreen in your morning routine. Sunscreen follows the treatment stage and comes before makeup.
  6. 6Apply makeup if you want it. Makeup comes after skincare; it does not move the treatment or moisturizer steps further down the queue.

Avoid adding several products just because they all contain centella. Too many skincare products can irritate skin, especially when several target signs of aging. A matching product lineup is not an application order, even if the bottles look unusually cooperative.1

How often should you use centella?

There is no single application frequency for every centella product. In a small study, 25 adults applied centella creams and hydrogels to their forearms twice daily for four weeks. Twice daily use is therefore a studied schedule, not a reason to override the directions on a particular serum, mask or cream. For a product intended for twice daily use, morning and evening fit that schedule.3

What should you expect, and when?

Expect hydration support rather than a fixed deadline for visible changes. The four week study tested formulas containing 2.5% and 5% centella extract. The 5% formulas performed best for improving hydration and reducing water loss through the skin. Those results belong to the tested formulas and forearm application, not every facial product carrying a centella percentage. Extract composition also varies with the plant's origin, so percentages alone are not a reliable shopping shortcut. The largest number on the bottle is not a complete job description.34

When should you stop or ask a doctor?

Stop using the product if you develop burning or a rash. Rare centella allergies can cause contact dermatitis, an inflammatory skin reaction. Ask a dermatology healthcare provider before using centella if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, under 18, or have a history of liver problems or skin cancer.2

If a reaction's trigger is unclear, a doctor can assess your symptoms and arrange specialist patch testing. Medical patch testing includes assessments after two days and again after a further two days because allergic reactions can develop slowly. A clear home spot test after 24 hours is not an allergy clearance certificate.5
