Why use lip scrub?

A lip scrub does that by physically rubbing skin away. But loose, peeling lip skin protects the new cells underneath while they prepare for exposure to dry air and other irritants. Removing it prematurely can cause irritation and dryness. Let flakes come away naturally rather than scrubbing, biting or pulling them off.12

What should you do instead?

For dry or flaky lips, use this sequence instead of a scrub.

  1. 1Stop using any lip product that burns, stings or feels uncomfortable. Those sensations mean irritation, not that the product is working.
  2. 2Apply a nonirritating lip balm several times a day and before bed. For very dry, cracked lips, use a thick ointment such as white petroleum jelly, which seals in water longer than waxes or oils.
  3. 3Before going outdoors, apply lip balm with SPF 30 or higher containing zinc oxide or titanium oxide. Reapply every 2 hours while outdoors.
  4. 4Leave peeling skin alone and avoid licking your lips. As saliva evaporates, lips become drier.
3

Choose a simple petroleum based balm rather than one with added scent or flavor. Menthol, phenol and salicylic acid can make lips drier; scents and flavorings can also irritate them. While lips are chapped, avoid mint, peppermint, cinnamon and citrus flavors, as well as fragrance. A balm that feels tingly is not a reason to keep applying it.13

How long should healing take?

With gentle lip care, chapped lips should noticeably improve within 2 to 3 weeks. If they do not, see a dermatologist rather than increasing exfoliation. Persistent dryness can have causes other than weather, including an allergic reaction or infection, and needs assessment.3

How do you use face scrub?

Face exfoliation is a separate decision, not a set of directions for your lips. If you choose a face scrub, use this general technique:1

  1. 1Check your skin first. Do not exfoliate open cuts, wounds or sunburned skin.
  2. 2Apply the scrub gently using small circular motions for about 30 seconds.
  3. 3Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water, not hot water.
  4. 4Apply moisturizer immediately afterward to reduce dryness.

When should you use face scrub?

If you exfoliate your face, use the exfoliating product at the cleansing stage, before moisturizer. Do not exfoliate daily. Frequency depends on skin type and how aggressive the method is; stronger exfoliation needs longer breaks. For aging skin, gentle exfoliation once or twice a week is an option. Follow the product directions rather than increasing the amount or frequency to chase faster results.2456

Is face scrub good for skin?

Physical exfoliation can improve dullness by removing surface dead skin, but exfoliation is optional. Skipping exfoliation is a valid routine choice, even if it leaves the skincare shopping list looking underemployed. Scrubs can be too irritating for dry, sensitive or acne prone skin. Prescription retinoids, retinol and benzoyl peroxide can increase sensitivity or peeling, and exfoliation can worsen dryness. Avoid aggressive exfoliation if you develop dark spots after skin injuries, particularly with darker skin tones.25
