How to apply and rinse it
- 1Wash your hands before starting. Clean hands help avoid transferring dirt and bacteria to your face.
- 2Dispense the cleansing oil into your palm, following the amount on your bottle. Gently massage it over your face to help break down makeup, sunscreen residue and excess skin oil.
- 3Rinse with your hands and lukewarm water. Avoid hot water, which can dry your skin, and do not scrub with a rough cloth.
- 4Leave your face damp and gently massage in a water based cleanser. Choose a gentle formula rather than a harsh or excessively drying wash.
- 5Rinse off the second cleanser and pat dry with a soft towel. Apply moisturizer after cleansing; for oily or clogged pore prone skin, choose an oil free moisturizer.
Do you need it morning and night?
Use the oil cleansing step when you need help removing makeup or waterproof sunscreen, usually at the end of the day. General advice to wash your face twice daily does not mean doing two complete double cleanses. Most people can cleanse adequately with one thorough wash using a gentle cleanser. Waterproof makeup gives the extra step a job, rather than making your bathroom run a two person department.12
Which cleanser should come next?
For dry or sensitive skin, a gentle, unscented water based cream cleanser is less drying than a foaming cleanser. Combination skin can use a water based foaming cleanser. Oil cleansers help remove oily residue; water based cleansers remove sweat and dirt, so the second bottle is doing another job rather than requesting applause for the first.1
Be careful if you get clogged pores or breakouts
Oil cleansing helps some people with oily skin, but causes breakouts in others. Do not assume that an oil cleanser is automatically the right choice because your skin produces oil. If breakouts increase after adding manyo, reconsider the oil step rather than washing harder. A gentle cleanser labeled oil free and noncomedogenic, meaning formulated not to clog pores, is a sensible alternative. Continue moisturizing: drying out oily skin too much can stimulate more oil production.2
Treat cleansing as makeup and residue removal, not a reason to keep massaging blackheads. Washing or scrubbing too hard can worsen clogged pores. If acne is painful, inflamed, infected or filled with pus, contact a doctor instead of adding more cleansing steps.3
Test it before using it on your whole face
Apply the normal amount to a quarter sized area on the underside of your arm or bend of your elbow twice daily for seven to 10 days. For a cleanser, leave it on for five minutes or for the time its directions specify, then wash it off. This is a small area tolerance test, not a five minute facial massage instruction. If the area stays free of redness, itching and swelling, you can start using the product on your face.4
If a reaction develops, gently wash the product off and stop using it. A cool compress or petroleum jelly can help relieve irritated skin; seek dermatology care for a severe reaction that does not settle with these measures. Take a new rash around the eyes seriously, even with a rinse off cleanser: the skin there is thin and delicate, and brief product contact can cause contact dermatitis, an irritated or allergic rash.45
