Which PanOxyl wash should you start with?

The Creamy Wash contains 4% benzoyl peroxide; the Foaming Wash contains 10%. Both are intended for the face, chest and back. General benzoyl peroxide guidance is to start with the lowest strength to assess tolerance, so choose 4% if you are starting between these two. PanOxyl calls Acne Creamy Wash "creamy, dreamy, and mighty," but its actual instructions are refreshingly less theatrical.123

How to wash with PanOxyl

  1. 1Before your first full application, test a small amount on one or two small affected areas for 3 days. Use the wash directions below for those areas. Continue only if there is no reaction or discomfort.
  2. 2Wash your hands, then wet the skin you want to treat.
  3. 3Apply a small amount and gently massage with your fingertips for 1 to 2 minutes. Avoid washcloths, sponges and scrubbing tools.
  4. 4Rinse thoroughly with water and pat dry. Wash your hands afterwards.

PanOxyl's directions do not specify morning or evening. Start with one daily wash rather than using it at every cleansing opportunity. If you miss an application, skip it when the next one is nearly due; do not double up.4

What else belongs in the routine?

Use gentle skin care and avoid abrasive cleansers, drying alcohol products, astringents and exfoliants. Check with your doctor or pharmacist before combining PanOxyl with other acne treatments, including prescriptions, because combinations can increase dryness and irritation. Outdoors, use a broad spectrum, water resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher on exposed skin; choose one labelled "noncomedogenic" or "won't clog pores."345

Should you leave it on longer for back acne?

General back acne guidance describes leaving benzoyl peroxide foam washes on for 2 to 5 minutes. These two PanOxyl products specify 1 to 2 minutes, so follow their directions unless your dermatologist advises otherwise. Shower and change clothes promptly after sweating, and wash your back gently rather than using a loofah or back brush.26

How long until you see a difference?

Benzoyl peroxide generally takes about 4 to 6 weeks to show an effect. Back acne treatment can take 6 to 8 weeks for initial improvement and 3 to 4 months for complete clearing. Contact a doctor if there is no improvement after 4 to 6 weeks, or sooner if acne worsens. Deep, painful acne needs a dermatologist's help.46

The product pages include "Shop Now" and "Get Coupon," but neither is a step in washing correctly.2

When should you cut back or stop?

Dryness, peeling, warmth and slight stinging can occur. Reduce frequency for mild dryness or peeling; seek advice if symptoms persist or bother you. Stop and seek prompt medical advice for burning, blistering or swelling. Stop and get emergency help for hives, throat tightness, difficulty breathing, faintness, or swelling of the face, lips or tongue.34

Keep PanOxyl away from eyes, nose, mouth, broken or infected skin, hair and coloured fabrics. Benzoyl peroxide can bleach hair and fabric. Do not use it if you have had an allergic reaction to benzoyl peroxide; ask a doctor before using it on children under 12.34

Benzoyl peroxide can usually be used during pregnancy, but check with your doctor first. If breastfeeding, check with a doctor or pharmacist and avoid applying it to your breasts.3
