How to apply and rinse it
- 1Put the balm in your palm, following the amount on the label.
- 2Gently massage the cleanser into your skin with your fingertips to help break down makeup, oil and sunscreen residue. Do not scrub to remove stubborn makeup.
- 3Rinse with lukewarm water using your hands. Avoid hot water, which can dry your skin.
- 4If you are double cleansing, leave your skin damp and gently massage in a water based cleanser.
- 5Rinse away the second cleanser and pat your skin dry with a soft towel.
What is Zero cleansing balm?
A cleansing balm is used as a makeup removal cleanser, usually before a gentle cleanser in a double cleansing routine. A cleansing balm has a specific job in the routine, rather than the rather vague assignment of 'doing skincare'. The practical reason to use a balm is to help remove makeup particles; an oil based first cleanse is also useful for waterproof makeup and sunscreen.13
When should you use it?
Use the makeup removal step in the evening, before bed. Most people should wash their face in the morning and at night, but that does not mean using a balm and a second cleanser twice a day. For dry or sensitive skin, washing with water in the morning and using cleanser only at night can be a better fit. If you wash just once a day, make it the evening wash.23
Do you need a second cleanser?
Double cleansing can help if you wear makeup, especially waterproof makeup or waterproof sunscreen. For most people, one thorough wash with a gentle cleanser is enough. If you do not wear makeup, adding another wash can make the routine more drying without being necessary. For dry or sensitive skin, choose a gentle, unscented second cleanser; cream cleansers are less drying than foaming cleansers.13
How long should you massage it?
There is no standard massage time that applies to every cleanser. Follow any timing printed on your jar rather than treating a full minute as compulsory. Cleansing time depends on the cleanser and your skin type. Longer or repeated washing also removes natural oils and can leave skin drier.3
Who should be careful?
If you are prone to acne, an oil based cleanser can cause breakouts, especially when used alone. For acne prone skin, an oil free makeup remover followed by a gentle cleanser is an alternative. Stop using a skincare product that is causing breakouts. If you cannot work out which product is responsible, a dermatologist can help identify the cause.12
Stop using the balm if it causes burning, itching, redness, swelling or a rash. Cosmetic reactions can appear immediately or after repeated use. If you have a known fragrance allergy, avoid products containing fragrance and read the ingredients on your own jar. A dermatologist can investigate suspected cosmetic allergy with patch testing. Do not test an undiluted rinse off cleanser by leaving it on your skin as a patch.45
