Niacinamide, also called nicotinamide, is a form of vitamin B3. The skin barrier is the outer protective layer that helps keep water in and irritants out. Supporting that barrier is useful for dryness and sensitivity, not just for controlling shine.12

Will it help oily skin, pores and acne?

Niacinamide can reduce sebum, the oil responsible for facial shine. A 2% moisturizer reduced oiliness over four to six weeks.12

Acne treatment depends on severity, how long acne has been present and previous treatment response. Large painful lumps, persistent acne or scarring deserve medical assessment rather than choosing another cosmetic by its percentage. Dark marks can persist after spots heal, especially in darker skin, so active acne and leftover pigmentation are separate concerns.3

How long do dark spots and fine lines take?

Topical niacinamide can improve pigmentation and signs of skin aging. Improvements in eyelid wrinkles were reported after eight weeks with a 4% formula; a 5% formula improved fine lines, pigmentation, texture and red blotchiness over twelve weeks. Think in weeks rather than expecting a visible change after one application.14

How should you start using niacinamide?

  1. 1Choose a low concentration if your skin is sensitive. Most skincare products contain 5% or less.
  2. 2Test a small amount on your forearm and wait 24 hours before broader use. For rosacea, test daily on a small patch inside your arm for seven to ten days.
  3. 3Cleanse gently. For a separate niacinamide treatment, general guidance is to apply it after moisturizer, once daily to start; niacinamide can be used once or twice daily.
  4. 4If an acne gel causes excessive dryness with twice daily use, reduce application to once daily or every other day.

Check your existing products before adding another: niacinamide appears in cleansers, moisturizers and sunscreens, so a separate serum is not an entrance requirement.2

What if your skin is sensitive or you have rosacea?

Niacinamide moisturizers have improved barrier function in people with rosacea. The whole formula still matters: choose products made for sensitive skin and avoid fragrance, alcohol, menthol, glycolic acid and lactic acid. Moisturize after cleansing even if your skin feels oily. See a dermatologist if skincare changes do not control symptoms.15

Niacinamide can be paired with vitamin C, retinol, hyaluronic acid and ceramide moisturizers. For rosacea, avoid irritating acids rather than treating a compatible ingredient list as permission to use everything together. Niacinamide itself does not prevent sunburn or replace sunscreen.125

A niacinamide mask can help address shine, but it remains an extra, not a promotion to head of the routine. Follow its label for frequency and removal time. Wash it off immediately if it causes itching, burning or stinging, and see a dermatologist if your skin feels worse afterward.6

Niacinamide is generally gentle, but rare reactions include itching, mild burning, redness and allergy. Stop using a product that causes these symptoms rather than increasing the amount or frequency.2
