Does the creamy wash contain silicone too?

Yes. The 4% creamy wash contains both water and dimethicone, a silicone ingredient. Its formula also includes glycerin, propanediol and sorbitol. PanOxyl formulates the wash with ingredients that help retain moisture and soften skin to combat dryness. Water based does not mean water only. The wash treats acne on the face, chest and back with 4% benzoyl peroxide. Other PanOxyl products use different active ingredients, including salicylic acid and adapalene. PanOxyl is a brand rather than one formula, so the logo cannot do the ingredient checking for you.123

Where does PanOxyl go in your routine?

Use the creamy wash at the cleansing stage, before moisturizer. If you already double cleanse, the general sequence is an oil based cleanser followed by a water based cleanser; the creamy wash fits the second position because you use it with water and rinse it away. That is routine guidance, not a reason to add another wash. A full ten step routine is not necessary, even if the shopping list would be delighted. Adding several products at once also makes it harder to identify which product helps or causes irritation.45

How do you use the 4% creamy wash?

  1. 1Wet the area you want to cleanse. Lukewarm water is a good choice; hot water can increase dryness.
  2. 2Apply the creamy wash and gently massage for 1 to 2 minutes. Use your fingers rather than a scrubbing brush or washcloth.
  3. 3Rinse thoroughly, removing all cleanser residue.
  4. 4Pat dry with a clean towel instead of rubbing.
  5. 5Apply moisturizer after washing. Apply sunscreen before going outside.

Start with one application daily, in the morning or evening. PanOxyl's website directions allow a gradual increase to twice daily if needed or directed by your dermatologist. If dryness or peeling becomes bothersome, reduce use to once daily or every other day. More frequent washing is not the starting point.12

What should you expect?

Benzoyl peroxide treats mild to moderate acne and kills bacteria involved in acne. General benzoyl peroxide guidance gives 4 to 6 weeks to see effects; that is a useful expectation rather than an exact timetable for this wash. Contact your doctor if acne has not improved after that time. Dryness, peeling, warmth, tingling or slight stinging can occur. A medicated cleanser can also leave skin feeling tight, which is why moisturizer belongs after rinsing.467

Who should be careful?

Do not use the 4% creamy wash if you have very sensitive skin or are sensitive to benzoyl peroxide. Using another topical acne medicine at the same time increases the risk of dryness and irritation. Avoid combining the wash with other drying ingredients, such as salicylic acid. If you use prescription treatments, check the combination with your doctor or pharmacist. Ask a health professional before use during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and ask a doctor before using benzoyl peroxide on children under 12.267

Keep the wash away from eyes, lips and mouth, and avoid contact with hair and dyed fabrics because it can bleach them. Stop use and ask a doctor if irritation becomes severe. Stop using benzoyl peroxide and seek urgent medical help for throat tightness, trouble breathing, faintness or swelling of the eyes, face, lips or tongue.26
