What makes the water micellar?

Surfactant molecules have a water attracting end and an oil attracting end. In a cleanser, many of these molecules gather into clusters called micelles. Surfactants help oily material enter the watery cleansing solution so it can be removed from the skin. Micelles are an arrangement of cleansing molecules, not a separate luxury ingredient with its own publicist.2

What do the ingredients do?

These are general cleanser ingredient roles, not a checklist that every micellar water contains. Use them to understand the formula on your bottle.1

Ingredient groupJob in a cleanser
WaterHelps remove water soluble dirt.
SurfactantsLoosen oil and dirt and help remove them.
Moisturising ingredientsHelp replace skin oils and retain moisture.
GlycerineCan contribute to texture and appearance; glycerin has also been used to make cleansing systems milder.
EmulsifiersHelp prevent the formula separating into different layers.
PreservativesProlong shelf life and prevent mould.
FragranceAdds a pleasant smell.
Colours, thickeners and solventsAdjust texture and appearance.

Preservatives serve a practical purpose by preventing mould, which is not an appealing bonus ingredient. Some preservatives can cause allergy, so a known allergy matters more than treating the whole category as unnecessary.1

Does the surfactant name tell you how gentle it is?

The whole cleansing formula matters, including how its surfactants behave together. Surfactants can remove some of the skin's own components as well as unwanted oil. They can also remain in the outer skin layer after rinsing. Those interactions can weaken the skin barrier, the outer layer that helps protect skin, and cause dryness, redness or discomfort.2

Formulation can reduce those interactions. Some cleansing systems combine surfactants or use polymers that encourage larger, more stable surfactant structures. Larger structures are less likely to penetrate skin. That is a general formulation principle, not a feature to assume every micellar water has.2

Cleaning performance also depends on what needs removing. Laboratory tests on artificial skin found that surfactants removed sebum, the skin's oil, and dimethicone, a silicone used in cosmetics, through different mechanisms. Combining surfactants improved cleaning at lower total concentrations in those tests. An ingredient name alone therefore cannot tell you how a finished bottle will remove your makeup.3

Which ingredients deserve extra attention?

Avoid fragranced, harsh or excessively drying cleansers. For dry or sensitive skin, choose a gentle cleansing formula. Botanical ingredients are not automatically easier on skin: chamomile, lavender and rose oil can cause contact allergy. A plant name is still an ingredient, not a character reference.14

Alcohols and alpha hydroxy acids can sting. Be careful with acne cleansing ingredients if you also use acne products that stay on the skin, because combining too much treatment can cause excessive dryness and irritation.1

How does micellar water fit into cleansing?

Micellar water can remove makeup before a water based cleanser. This is an alternative to using an oil cleanser followed by another cleanser. Most people do not need two cleansing stages; one thorough wash with a gentle cleanser is usually enough.4

  1. 1Use micellar water to remove makeup before washing.
  2. 2Gently massage a water based cleanser into damp skin.
  3. 3Rinse the cleanser with lukewarm water rather than hot water.
  4. 4Pat skin dry with a soft towel.
4

Use the extra makeup removal stage when you need it rather than automatically adding it to every wash. Repeated washing can cause dryness, irritation and damage to the skin barrier. These steps describe following micellar water with a cleanser; whether a particular micellar water is intended to be left on depends on its directions.4

What should you expect from micellar water?

Micellar water's role here is makeup removal, not a treatment course with a set number of weeks to work. If acne remains a problem despite regular skincare, adding another cleansing product is not always enough. A dermatologist or primary care provider can help you choose an appropriate approach.45

If you take isotretinoin, a prescription acne medicine, dry skin is common. Keep cleansing gentle and apply an oil free moisturiser while skin is still damp after cleansing, and whenever skin feels dry.6

Stop using a cleanser that causes redness, itching, swelling or persistent irritation. Cleansers can cause irritant reactions or contact allergy, and increasing cleansing is not a solution to those symptoms. Seek medical advice if the skin problem is not settling.15
