Garnier sells several micellar formulas, so 'the Garnier one' is not much of a shopping list. The US, UK and Canadian ranges differ, including their ingredients and directions, so match the full bottle name and country rather than relying on the cap colour alone.23

What does micellar water actually do?

Micelles are tiny clusters of cleansing molecules that attract and lift away dirt, oil and makeup. Micellar water combines these cleansing agents with water and moisturising ingredients. Its mild cleansing action removes grime without stripping away much of the skin's natural oil, making it a useful option for dry and sensitive skin. That is general micellar water guidance, not a promise that every Garnier formula will suit every sensitive face.4

The UK range also includes Rose Glow for cleansing and brightening dull looking skin, and Oil Infused for waterproof and stubborn makeup. For dry skin, the milky texture is the clearest texture based choice. For waterproof mascara, choose a formula explicitly designed for waterproof removal rather than treating every micellar bottle as interchangeable.2

How do you use Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water?

  1. 1Saturate a cotton pad or reusable cleansing pad with your chosen Garnier micellar water.
  2. 2Gently wipe across your face to lift away makeup and impurities. Do not scrub or use harsh rubbing.
  3. 3For the US Vitamin C formula, wipe from the centre of your face outward. On closed eyelids, hold a saturated pad for 10 to 15 seconds, then gently wipe and repeat if needed.
  4. 4Follow your bottle's directions. The formulas covered here do not require rinsing; the US Vitamin C formula can also be rinsed if you prefer.
  5. 5If you are removing sunscreen or cosmetics, follow with a gentle cleanser as needed, then continue with your usual treatments and moisturiser. Use sunscreen in the morning.

Garnier's US range is intended for daily morning and evening use. The US Vitamin C formula has explicit twice daily directions. The Canadian Salicylic Acid formula directs daily use for morning cleansing and evening makeup removal, including the face, eyes and lips. Use the directions for your own version rather than transferring an eye application time from another bottle.135

Do you need to rinse or wash again?

No rinse means the micellar formula can be used without washing it off. It does not mean every makeup or sunscreen routine needs only a pad. Micellar water followed by a gentle water based cleanser is a useful alternative to an oil cleanser followed by a second cleanser, especially for makeup removal. Garnier specifically suggests pairing the US Vitamin C version with a face wash or cleansing balm for heavy makeup or long wear sunscreen.56

Most people do not need two cleansing steps every time. One thorough cleanse with a gentle cleanser is usually enough; waterproof makeup and waterproof sunscreen are reasons to consider an extra removal step. Overwashing can cause dryness, irritation and damage to the skin barrier, the protective outer layer of skin. For dry or sensitive skin, a gentle unscented cream cleanser is generally less drying than a foaming cleanser.6

Is Garnier micellar water a toner?

A toner is used on clean skin and can supply hydration or ingredients aimed at particular concerns. If you already use a toner, apply it after cleansing, before your usual treatments and moisturiser.4

Which formulas deserve a closer look for sensitive skin?

The US Vitamin C formula is free of fragrance, oil and alcohol. Those details do not apply to the entire range: the Canadian Salicylic Acid ingredient list includes denatured alcohol. If avoiding alcohol matters to your routine, that Canadian formula is not the appropriate choice. Garnier markets it for oily and acne prone skin, including sensitive skin, but the sensitive skin description does not make all the formulas identical.135

The UK All in 1 Cleansing Water for Sensitive Skin contains panthenol, a moisturising and soothing ingredient. Garnier describes this version as tested by dermatologists and ophthalmologists for sensitive skin and eyes. Its hydration claim is up to 24 hours, based on an instrumental test involving 26 people. Separately, eight in ten women rated it their most gentle way to cleanse sensitive skin in a self assessment involving 334 women. These are hydration and user experience results, not a reason to replace moisturiser.7

What results should you expect?

Makeup removal happens during cleansing. The US Vitamin C version also aims to improve the appearance of dullness and uneven tone with regular use, but there is no specific number of days to put on the calendar. Treat that brightening benefit as an extra, not as a replacement for cleansing performance. General micellar water use can help remove excess oil and impurities, but micellar water does not treat acne or erase wrinkles.45

What does the US Vitamin C version cost?

How long can you keep a bottle?

Garnier's US guidance gives micellar water a three year shelf life. Once you open it, use the timeframe printed on the back of your bottle rather than assuming the full three years still applies.1
