What does micellar water actually do?

Micellar water contains purified water, moisturizers and micelles, tiny clusters of cleansing molecules that attract and lift away dirt, oil and makeup. Its mild cleansing agents remove grime without stripping away much of the skin's natural oils. The texture is clear and lightweight, and feels close to plain water. The purpose is cleaning, not treating acne or erasing wrinkles.1

Which micellar water should you choose?

  • For sensitive skin, choose a mild, fragrance free product. Sensitive skin can sting or burn after product use. An unscented label is not the same thing: masking fragrances can still irritate.
  • For oily skin or skin prone to acne, look for oil free or noncomedogenic products. Noncomedogenic means formulated not to clog pores; it does not turn a cleanser into an acne treatment.
  • For dry skin, prioritize gentle cleansing. Dry skin often feels rough or itchy, or looks flaky.
  • For combination skin, judge both the oily and dry areas rather than choosing solely by the shiniest part of your face.

How do you use micellar water?

  1. 1Pour a small amount into your hands, onto a cotton pad or onto a reusable microfiber cloth.
  2. 2Gently massage over your face. Avoid harsh scrubbing.
  3. 3If you are removing sunscreen or cosmetic products, follow with a gentle oil or water based cleanser.
  4. 4Apply any toner and spot treatments you already use after cleansing.
  5. 5Finish with moisturizer, and add sunscreen every morning.

Micellar water can be your morning cleanser, your evening cleanser for removing the day's buildup, or both. It does not typically need rinsing off. Men should also wash their face after exercise; when using a rinse off cleanser, use lukewarm rather than hot water.12

Can micellar water replace face wash?

For an ordinary cleanse, micellar water can serve as your cleanser. Sunscreen, heavy makeup and waterproof makeup change the decision: use an additional gentle cleanser to remove them thoroughly. Micellar water followed by a water based cleanser is an alternative to traditional double cleansing, which starts with an oil based cleanser and finishes with a water based one.14

Most people only need one thorough wash with a gentle cleanser, so the extra step is not a skincare loyalty test. Adding another cleanse automatically can lead to overwashing, dryness, irritation and damage to the skin barrier, the skin's protective outer layer. Use the second cleanser to solve a removal problem, not simply to make the routine longer.4

If you need a second cleanser, avoid harsh, excessively drying or fragranced formulas. Cream cleansers are less drying than foaming cleansers and are a useful option for dry, sensitive skin. An oil based cleanser can cause breakouts in skin prone to acne, particularly when used alone, so an oil cleansing step is not automatically the better choice.4

Is micellar water a toner?

Toners are used after cleansing and can hydrate skin or deliver ingredients for specific concerns. If you use one, apply it to clean, dry skin.1

Where does shaving fit?

Micellar cleansing does not replace the preparation used for shaving. Wet your skin and hair to soften them, use a moisturizing shaving cream and shave in the direction of hair growth. Rinse the razor after each swipe. If close shaving causes razor bumps, burns or ingrown hairs, try a single or double blade razor and avoid pulling the skin taut. Apply moisturizer after shaving while the skin is still damp.2

Will micellar water clear acne?

Treat micellar water as the cleansing part of an acne routine, not the treatment. For acne, wash twice daily with a gentle cleanser and do not scrub or squeeze spots. A pharmacist can advise on treatments such as salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. See a GP if self treatment is not helping, spots are numerous, deep or painful, acne is causing scars, or it is affecting your mental health. Hot, swollen or red skin also needs medical advice; redness can be harder to see on brown and black skin.3

Check affected Simple bottles before use

A UK recall announced in August 2026 covers affected batches of Simple Kind to Skin Micellar Cleansing Water in 200ml, 400ml and 730ml bottles. Affected batches could be microbiologically contaminated and cause eye inflammation. Check your bottle's size and batch code against the Simple recall notice, or contact your place of purchase. Stop using an affected batch immediately and follow the return, disposal and refund instructions. The recall concerns specified batches, not every micellar water.5
