What does micellar water do?

Micellar water contains tiny clusters of cleansing molecules called micelles, which attract and lift away dirt, oil and makeup. The texture is lightweight and feels much like water. Micellar water cleans rather than tones, even if the two bottles look equally qualified to contain fancy water.1

Cleansers come as liquids, gels, creams and bars, so a liquid format is a packaging choice rather than a promotion. What matters is how gently the formula cleans your skin. Cleansing agents called surfactants loosen oily dirt that plain water cannot remove effectively.2

How do you use it?

  1. 1Apply a small amount of micellar water to a cotton pad, or use your hands where the bottle's directions allow.
  2. 2Gently pass it over your face without scrubbing.
  3. 3If you are removing sunscreen or cosmetic products, follow with a gentle oil or water based cleanser.
  4. 4Apply any usual toner or spot treatment after cleansing, then moisturizer. Finish your morning routine with sunscreen.

Do you need to rinse it off?

Micellar water generally does not need rinsing. A second cleanser is useful for removing sunscreen and cosmetic products, especially heavy or waterproof makeup. For that washing step, use lukewarm water, apply cleanser with your fingertips, rinse and pat dry with a soft towel.13

Can you use it every day?

Micellar water can be used in the morning, at night or both. Limit face washing to twice daily and after heavy sweating. Using micellar water to remove makeup followed by a cleanser is one cleansing routine, not a reason to add more washing sessions throughout the day.14

What if your skin is dry or sensitive?

Micellar water is generally a gentle cleansing option for dry and sensitive skin. For the bottle you choose, look for a gentle, nonabrasive cleanser without alcohol. Avoid scrubbing, and apply moisturizer if your skin feels dry or itchy. Be gentle around your eyes rather than pulling at the skin.14

The full formula matters more than the word "micellar." Fragrances and preservatives can cause reactions, and some cleanser formulas can cause clogged pores. If you have a known ingredient allergy, check the complete ingredient list before using the product. A "hypoallergenic" label does not rule out irritation.2

What results should you expect?

Expect removal of dirt, excess oil and most makeup, not an acne or wrinkle treatment. Cleansing is the purpose of micellar water; moisturizer and any treatment products have separate places in the routine.1

What if it stings or leaves your skin tight?

Stinging during or after cleansing can occur with sensitive skin. Excessive washing can remove protective surface oils and lead to dryness or an irritated, red rash. Stop using a cleanser that causes irritation rather than scrubbing harder or washing more often. Persistent irritation or concerns about your cleansing routine are reasons to see a dermatologist.23
