What does micellar water do?

Micellar water contains tiny clusters of cleansing molecules called micelles, which attract and lift away dirt, oil and makeup. It feels lightweight and almost like plain water, but has cleansing ingredients that water alone lacks. Toner belongs after cleansing, not instead of it.12

How to use G2G micellar water

  1. 1Apply a small amount of micellar water to your hands or a cotton pad, unless your bottle gives different directions.
  2. 2Gently work it over your face to remove dirt, oil and makeup. Avoid scrubbing or repeatedly rubbing the same area.
  3. 3When removing makeup or sunscreen, follow with a gentle cleanser. Apply that cleanser with your fingertips, rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry with a soft towel.
  4. 4Continue with any usual toner or spot treatment, then moisturizer. Finish your morning routine with sunscreen.

Do you need to rinse it off?

Micellar water generally does not need rinsing. For G2G, let the bottle's instructions settle that choice. Removing makeup or sunscreen is a separate issue: follow micellar water with a gentle cleanser rather than assuming that a no rinse instruction means every cosmetic has been removed.1

Can you use it every day?

General micellar water guidance allows morning use, evening use or both. Keep face washing to twice daily, plus after heavy sweating. Count micellar water as cleansing, rather than adding it as an unrelated extra wipe between washes. Remove makeup before bed, including eye makeup, and avoid turning removal into a scrubbing session.134

When is another cleanser useful?

Heavy or waterproof makeup can need more than micellar water. Micellar water followed by a water based cleanser is an alternative to traditional double cleansing, which starts with an oil based cleanser. Two cleansing steps are useful for stubborn makeup, not a promotion every bathroom routine has to accept. If you are not removing makeup or resistant sunscreen, one thorough wash with a gentle cleanser is enough for most people.15

For a follow up cleanser, avoid harsh, excessively drying or fragranced formulas. Dry or sensitive skin usually suits a gentle cream cleanser better than a foaming cleanser because cream cleansers are less drying. An oil based first cleanser is not automatically better for acne prone skin: it can cause breakouts, especially when used alone.5

Is it suitable for sensitive skin?

Micellar water is generally a gentle option for dry and sensitive skin. For the G2G bottle you are considering, check the full ingredient list rather than treating the category name as a sensitive skin guarantee. Choose a gentle, non abrasive cleanser without alcohol. Fragrances and preservatives in cleansers can cause reactions, and some cleanser formulas can cause clogged pores.123

Will it help acne?

Micellar water removes excess oil and impurities, but does not treat acne or erase wrinkles. Its job is cleaning during use, not delivering a treatment result over several weeks. If you have acne, look for skincare labelled noncomedogenic, meaning formulated not to clog pores. Remove makeup at the end of the day and wash gently; scrubbing can irritate skin and make acne worse.16

If you already use an acne treatment that stays on your skin, be cautious about adding a cleanser containing acne treatment ingredients. Combining the two can cause excessive dryness and irritation. New breakouts after changing skincare deserve a closer look at the products involved; a dermatologist can help identify the cause when it is unclear.24

When should you stop or get help?

Stop using a cleanser that causes stinging, itching, redness, swelling or dry, chafed skin. Cleansers can irritate skin, and washing too much can damage the skin barrier, the outer layer that limits moisture loss. See a dermatologist if reactions or skincare concerns persist. For acne, see a doctor if spots are deep, painful or causing scars, self treatment is not helping, or your skin becomes hot, swollen and red.2356
