What do Mighty Patches do?

Pimple patches work as small dressings, not as a treatment for every cause of acne. Hydrocolloid is a material that absorbs fluid and forms a gel. A hydrocolloid dressing has an inner layer that takes up fluid and an outer layer that protects the area. It also maintains a moist environment that supports healing. Covering a blemish provides a physical barrier against further picking. That protection is useful even when the pimple does not disappear after one application.34

Research on hydrocolloid patches for acne is promising but still limited. In a small study of 20 people with mild to moderate acne, acne severity and inflammation improved from day 3 to day 7. Another study followed 41 people for 14 days and found improvements in blemish texture, redness, size and height with a gentle wash plus hydrocolloid patches compared with a gentle wash alone. These are reasons to use a patch as a spot treatment, not to replace an acne treatment plan with stickers.4

Which pimples are worth patching?

What you seeWhat to expect from a patch
A surface pimple that has opened and is releasing fluidThe best match for fluid absorption and protection.
A closed pimpleLess reliable results, although some reduction in size and redness is possible.
Blackheads or deeper whiteheadsLittle help with removing the underlying blockage.
A deep, painful bump without a visible headA patch can discourage picking, but do not expect it to draw out a deep blockage.
35

A white or flesh colored closed bump is not necessarily a pus filled pimple. A whitehead forms when oil and dead skin plug a pore; a pustule is an inflamed pimple containing pus. Nodules and cysts develop deeper in the skin and can feel tender or painful. Cysts contain pus, while nodules do not. This distinction matters when deciding whether there is surface fluid for a patch to absorb.6

Choose Original if your priority is a straightforward patch with a clear wear time. Choose Invisible+ if you want a less obvious patch while you are out. Invisible+ is designed to look less obvious on skin, because even a pimple sticker apparently needs a public relations department. Its thinner appearance is the distinction, not a reason to expect stronger fluid absorption.12

How to apply Mighty Patch Original

  1. 1Cleanse your face. Do not squeeze or pop the pimple to prepare it for a patch.
  2. 2Let the skin dry completely. Patches do not stick as well to wet skin.
  3. 3Place Mighty Patch Original directly over the blemish.
  4. 4Leave Original on for 6 to 8 hours, then peel it off. An overnight application can fit that wear time.
23

Hero describes Original as shrinking the look of a blemish in one use. Expect a change in appearance rather than assuming the whole pimple will be gone: after removal, a blemish can look smaller and less inflamed. Follow the directions for the specific Mighty Patch you buy rather than transferring Original's wear time to every patch in the range.23

Can you wear Mighty Patch under skincare and makeup?

For Invisible+, Hero's sequence is to cleanse, apply toner if that is part of your routine, let the skin dry and attach the patch. Finish the rest of your skincare afterward. For coverage, dab concealer onto the patch and blend it with a sponge. Concealer can go on top of Invisible+, which makes the patch the rare skincare product with its own makeup appointment. The tapered edges are designed to make the patch blend into skin, rather than sit there as an obvious raised circle.1

Who should be careful with pimple patches?

Adhesive can irritate the skin around a blemish, especially if you already react to sticky dressings. Avoid patches if you have a known adhesive allergy, and stop using a patch if it irritates the surrounding skin. Medicated patches can also contain acne ingredients that irritate sensitive skin. An unmedicated patch is an option to consider instead, but the adhesive still matters. Check the exact package rather than assuming every product in a patch range has the same formula.35

What if the pimple is deep and painful?

Do not try to squeeze a deep bump into something a patch can absorb. Squeezing can increase inflammation and raise the risk of infection, discoloration and scarring. A patch can protect the area and discourage touching, but a warm compress is another practical option. Apply a clean, warm, damp washcloth for 10 to 15 minutes, three times daily, using a clean washcloth each time. This can help the pimple move closer to the surface.7

See a dermatologist if a deep, painful pimple does not go away with home care or if you develop several deep, painful pimples. For a large, painful bump, a dermatologist can consider an injection to reduce inflammation more quickly. If multiple pimples keep appearing each week, ask about ongoing acne treatment rather than treating each new bump only after it arrives.57

Do Mighty Patches prevent acne or remove marks?

Pimple patches do not prevent new acne or replace treatment for clogged pores. A flat mark left after a breakout is also different from an active pimple. These marks can be pink, red, purple, brown or black, and they are often mistaken for scars. Unlike permanent scars, flat discoloration can fade on its own, although some spots last a year or longer. Do not judge a patch's effect on a fluid filled blemish by whether the remaining color disappears with it.36
