Choose the texture your skin needs

Lotions suit mild dryness. Creams are lighter than ointments and absorb more quickly, while ointments provide a stronger protective layer and can feel greasy. A lighter texture is a sensible starting point under makeup if it handles your dryness; do not choose it solely because it looks easier to layer. Moisturizer is meant to soften and hydrate skin as well as form a base for cosmetics, rather than serve as unpaid foundation support.1

Look for moisturizing ingredients rather than an ingredient blacklist. Glycerin and hyaluronic acid attract moisture, while petrolatum, silicone and oils help keep moisture in the skin. Thicker, greasier products generally moisturize more effectively. Those are hydration properties, not a ranking of how smoothly each formula will sit under your foundation.3

How to apply moisturizer before makeup

  1. 1Wash with a gentle cleanser and gently pat your face dry.
  2. 2Apply any skin medication or treatment after cleansing, before moisturizer.
  3. 3Apply your moisturizer. If you have just bathed, applying moisturizer promptly helps keep water in the skin.
  4. 4Apply sunscreen before makeup. Choose broad spectrum protection, SPF 30 or higher, and water resistance.
  5. 5Apply makeup last. Avoid repeatedly rubbing the layers in circles or back and forth; those motions were associated with more pilling.

Keep optional skincare layers to a minimum while troubleshooting. A simple routine also limits exposure to products that can irritate skin, especially several antiaging treatments used together. Makeup belongs after skincare, which gives the morning routine an order without requiring a project manager.46

Check which layer actually pills

Pilling means applied product balls up into little flakes. To troubleshoot, check your face after moisturizer, after sunscreen, and after foundation. Note the first step where the balls appear before deciding which product to replace. This is a practical way to separate the layers, not a test of whether a product has absorbed.2

In a study of 528 women using specific layered formulas, most pilling happened after sunscreen rather than foundation. Foundation sometimes reduced existing pilling. If the flakes first appear after sunscreen, assess that combination instead of automatically blaming the moisturizer, which has apparently been appointed responsible for everything underneath makeup.2

Lower skin hydration and oiliness were associated with pilling when both sunscreen and foundation were involved. Choosing the lightest possible moisturizer is therefore not an obvious answer for dry skin. Start with the texture that meets your hydration needs, and assess the finished combination rather than judging one product in isolation.2

Keep sunscreen in the routine

Do not solve pilling by skipping sun protection. Apply sunscreen to dry skin 15 minutes before going outdoors, and reapply approximately every two hours outdoors or after swimming or sweating. That outdoor timing is not a required waiting period between moisturizer and foundation. SPF in a moisturizer or makeup does not remove the need for sunscreen reapplication.5

When to stop using a moisturizer

Pilling is a product application problem; a rash needs a different response. Stop using a moisturizer if contact dermatitis, an inflammatory skin reaction, develops. Fragrances and preservatives can cause contact allergy, and a dermatologist can investigate suspected allergy with patch testing. Very occlusive moisturizers can also aggravate acne. If choosing a formula remains difficult or you have ongoing skin problems, see a dermatologist.16
