What should the before and after show?

Type of creamRealistic changeTiming and limits
Moisturizing creamPlumper skin with less noticeable fine linesImprovement can be immediate, but is temporary and needs daily application.
Cream containing retinolA small improvement through support for collagen productionNot an immediate lifting effect; the neck needs a gentler introduction.

A smoother looking surface and a lifted neck are different outcomes, so decide which change you want before choosing a cream.1

Can a neck cream improve wrinkles over eight weeks?

Some specific formulas have produced measurable improvements. In a randomized trial, 30 women aged 35 to 60 applied a cream containing 0.05% vitamin K2 to one side of their face and neck and a placebo cream to the other side, twice daily for eight weeks. Measurements were taken at the start and at weeks two, four and eight. The vitamin K2 cream improved neck wrinkle roughness, elasticity and measured sagging compared with placebo. This is an encouraging result for that formula, rather than a reason to expect the same changes from any neck cream.3

How should you use a neck cream?

  1. 1Cleanse your neck. If you use an antioxidant serum, such as vitamin C, apply it after cleansing in the morning.
  2. 2Use a moisturizer for hydration. Hyaluronic acid can be used morning and night to help reduce the appearance of neck wrinkles.
  3. 3Finish your morning routine with broad spectrum SPF 30 or higher on your neck and other exposed skin.
  4. 4If using retinol, start with a lower strength every other evening for a few weeks. Apply it after cleansing, then follow with a nighttime moisturizer. Consider increasing strength only if there is no irritation, burning or redness.

Who should be careful with retinol?

Retinol is a retinoid, a type of vitamin A ingredient. Do not use retinoids during pregnancy. Skin allergies, dryness or significant redness make retinoids a less suitable choice; ask a dermatologist about alternatives. Stop using a retinol neck cream if it causes burning, redness or irritation. Irritation can trigger dark marks in darker skin, so start slowly and use moisturizer.24

Do you need a separate neck cream?

Many facial skincare products can also be used on the neck, although neck skin can be more sensitive and needs lower strength retinoids. Choose by ingredients and the change you want. A high price does not mean a cream is more potent or more likely to work, even if the jar looks ready for an award ceremony.2

If your goal is lifting loose neck skin rather than softening fine lines, speak with a board certified dermatologist about procedures. Skin tightening treatments can produce more noticeable changes than creams, but substantial sagging can limit their usefulness.1
