Is Olay Regenerist good?

It is a reasonable option if you want lightweight hydration and help with the appearance of fine lines. Niacinamide, also called nicotinamide, is vitamin B3. It can strengthen the skin barrier, the outer layer that helps keep water in, and improve hydration. Clinical studies of topical niacinamide have also found improvements in fine lines, uneven pigmentation, texture and elasticity. Those ingredient benefits make niacinamide useful in skincare, but the percentage and complete formula matter when choosing a particular serum.5

The Canadian Regenerating Serum contains water, dimethicone, glycerin, niacinamide, panthenol, palmitoyl pentapeptide 4, tocopheryl acetate, allantoin and green tea leaf extract, alongside other formula ingredients. Olay identifies panthenol as pro vitamin B5, palmitoyl pentapeptide 4 as its amino peptide, and tocopheryl acetate as vitamin E. Niacinamide and peptide percentages are not disclosed, so there is no numerical strength to compare with a serum that states its concentration.1

Which Regenerist serum are you buying?

The Canadian MAX Wrinkle Serum is a 40 ml option containing two named peptides, niacinamide, panthenol and vitamin E. Olay's claim of twice the peptides compares MAX with Olay Wrinkle Correction Serum, not the original Regenerating Serum. The Canadian MAX formula is made without fragrance, parabens, phthalates, mineral oil or synthetic dyes. Its directions specify a generous, even layer before moisturizer, morning and night.7

Choose the Canadian Regenerating Serum if you want the exact product named here. Consider US MAX if you prefer its two peptide formula and Olay's stated suitability for oily, normal and dry skin. Consider US Micro Sculpting if you want the creamy texture Olay describes and the lower listed price of those two US options. The UK Niacinamide24 serum is another lightweight option focused on hydration, niacinamide and vitamin E, rather than an interchangeable bottle of the Canadian formula.234

For the UK serum, Olay claims immediate hydration lasting 24 hours and reduced visible fine lines and wrinkles after 14 days. Its claim of 99% niacinamide purity describes the ingredient's purity, not a serum containing 99% niacinamide. Olay also describes testing on more than 100 women with different skin tones.4

What if your skin is sensitive?

Topical niacinamide is generally well tolerated and can often be used by people who cannot tolerate topical retinoids or fruit acids. That makes the ingredient worth considering if stronger treatments are uncomfortable. Studies of niacinamide moisturizers have also found improved barrier function and reduced reactions to irritants. Choose based on the complete product, rather than treating an ingredient's tolerability as a prediction of how your skin will respond to the serum.5

Has Olay Regenerist Serum been discontinued?

A worldwide discontinuation of Regenerating Serum is not confirmed. Olay Canada lists the 50 ml Regenerating Serum Fragrance Free, while Olay's US store lists Micro Sculpting Serum Fragrance Free and Niacinamide MAX Wrinkle Reducing Serum. The US store gives the two serums separate listings, because apparently Regenerist needed its own filing system.
