Does PanOxyl help with armpit odor?
Sweat itself is odorless. Bacteria on the skin produce the smell, which is why an antibacterial wash is sometimes used for odor. PanOxyl is sold as an acne wash, so using it for odor gives the bottle a job its front label did not apply for. There is no established timetable here for odor improvement or how long any benefit lasts.1
Should you choose 4% or 10%?
Start with the lower strength to check skin tolerance. PanOxyl Acne Creamy Wash contains 4% benzoyl peroxide; Acne Foaming Wash contains 10%. PanOxyl describes the 4% wash as the gentler option if 10% is too strong. Sensitive skin is a reason to be cautious, not a reason to start with the strongest bottle.123
How to use PanOxyl on your armpits
Before your first full application, test a small amount on one or two small areas for three days. If there is no reaction or discomfort, follow the wash directions.4
- 1Wet your underarms.
- 2Apply a small amount, enough to coat the area you want to treat.
- 3Massage gently for 1 to 2 minutes.
- 4Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water and pat dry.
Start once daily; a shower is a convenient time. The 10% Foaming Wash directions allow a gradual increase to twice daily if needed or directed by your dermatologist. Rinse the wash off rather than leaving it on overnight. More product does not make treatment work faster.23
What should you expect?
For acne, benzoyl peroxide can take 4 to 6 weeks to show an effect. Contact your doctor if the acne has not improved by then, or sooner if it worsens. Dryness, peeling and mild stinging can occur. Using the wash less often can ease common irritation; get advice if symptoms bother you or persist.24
What should you avoid?
Do not apply benzoyl peroxide to cuts, grazes or infected skin. If shaving has left cuts, do not use the wash there. Avoid abrasive cleansers and products that dry or irritate the area. Combine it with other acne treatments only with a doctor or pharmacist's approval, including prescription treatments. Keep it away from hair and colored towels or clothing because it can bleach them.24
Benzoyl peroxide can usually be used during pregnancy, but check with your doctor first. Check before using it while breastfeeding, and do not apply it to your breasts. For children under 12, ask a doctor before use.24
Get immediate medical advice for burning, blistering, marked redness, swelling or a rash. Stop using benzoyl peroxide and get emergency help for throat tightness, difficulty breathing, faintness or swelling of the face, lips or tongue.4
Can it replace deodorant?
Deodorants target smell and antiperspirants reduce sweat, a distinction the bathroom shelf does not bother to explain. PanOxyl is not a sweat control replacement. During an underarm breakout, PanOxyl advises avoiding deodorants and powders.1
When armpit bumps need a diagnosis
Folliculitis is an infection in hair follicles that can resemble acne. Shaving and tight clothing can damage follicles. If hair removal caused folliculitis, stop shaving, waxing or plucking for 30 days. Warm compresses for 15 to 20 minutes, three to four times daily, can help with discomfort. A dermatologist can confirm the cause; some cases need medication.5
Deep, painful lumps, especially those that return, drain or leave scars, deserve a dermatologist appointment rather than repeated acne treatment. Hidradenitis suppurativa is a condition that causes painful deep lumps, often in the armpits. It is not acne or a result of unclean skin, and early treatment can help prevent worsening.6
