The detailed ingredient percentages and 80 minute reapplication directions below apply to the US Clear Sunscreen Stick SPF 50+. For the SPF 60+ stick or another market's version, follow the directions on your own packaging.2
Does it leave a white cast or work over makeup?
Shiseido describes the UK SPF 50+ stick as lightweight and invisible on any skin tone, with application under or over makeup. The clear finish avoids adding another visible colour layer, because sunscreen does not need a shade matching appointment. If applying over makeup is your priority, this format is designed for that use; still rub the sunscreen in to create even coverage.45
How do you apply enough?
- 1Open the cap and twist up the stick.
- 2Apply liberally at least 15 minutes before sun exposure. Swipe across the cheeks, face and neck.
- 3Use four passes back and forth on each area you are protecting. This is general dermatologist guidance for sunscreen sticks, not a Shiseido specific swipe count.
- 4Rub the sunscreen in afterwards for an even layer, using fingertips to cover remaining areas. Keep the product out of your eyes.
- 5Cover all exposed skin, including ears, backs of hands and tops of feet. For lips, use a lip balm with SPF 30 or higher.
When should you reapply?
For the US SPF 50+ stick, reapply at least every two hours, after 80 minutes of swimming or sweating, and immediately after towel drying. General dermatologist guidance is more cautious: reapply immediately after swimming or sweating. Water resistant does not mean that one application covers the whole day. Shiseido describes the UK stick's protection as becoming stronger with water or sweat; keep following the reapplication directions rather than extending the interval.246
Is it mineral or fragrance free?
The US SPF 50+ formula uses four nonmineral sunscreen filters: avobenzone 2.5%, homosalate 10%, octisalate 5% and octocrylene 10%. Its inactive ingredients include mineral oil, licorice root extract and fragrance. Mineral oil is not a mineral sunscreen filter. If fragrance free skincare is a requirement for you, this SPF 50+ formula is not the right match.1
Shiseido positions the UK stick for portable touch ups, so carrying sunscreen does not require bringing the bathroom along. Store the US SPF 50+ stick in its container away from excessive heat and direct sun.14
Who should be careful?
Do not apply the US SPF 50+ stick to damaged or broken skin. If sunscreen gets into your eyes, rinse with water. Stop using it and ask a doctor if a rash develops. Ask a doctor before using it on a child under six months. Keep it out of children's reach; if swallowed, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center immediately.1
Broad spectrum protection covers UVA and UVB rays, but no sunscreen blocks all harmful UV radiation. Use shade and protective clothing as well. Apply sunscreen before going outside even on cloudy days and in winter, not only for beach trips.56
