What makes a sunscreen stick effective?

SPF mainly measures protection against UVB, the rays responsible for sunburn. Broad spectrum protection also covers UVA, which contributes to skin aging and skin cancer. Look for both on the label. For extended outdoor exposure, such as a beach day, choose SPF 50 or higher. SPF testing uses a set amount of sunscreen on the skin; applying too little can leave you with less protection than the number suggests. A sunscreen stick still needs a proper layer of sunscreen; the tube has not negotiated an exemption.234

How do you apply sunscreen stick to your face?

  1. 1Read the stick's label for its application directions and water resistance instructions.
  2. 2Start with dry skin and apply sunscreen 15 minutes before going outdoors.
  3. 3Work across your face in sections, making four passes back and forth over each area. Overlap the strokes slightly so you do not leave gaps.
  4. 4Rub the sunscreen in to create an even layer. Keep the product out of your eyes and mouth.
  5. 5Cover your ears, hairline and neck, too. Protect your lips with a lip balm containing SPF 30 or higher.

How many passes of sunscreen stick should I use?

Use four passes back and forth on each area, not four strokes divided across your entire face. This is general application guidance to help you use enough sunscreen. Rubbing in afterwards is part of the method, rather than an optional finishing step: it helps distribute the sunscreen into an even layer.1

When should you reapply?

Reapply every two hours outdoors and immediately after swimming or heavy sweating. Sunscreen can wear off or be removed by water, sweat and towel drying. Water resistance lasts for the 40 or 80 minutes stated on the label during swimming or sweating; it does not mean waterproof. A higher SPF does not extend the time between applications. Apply sunscreen on exposed skin every day you will be outside, including cloudy days.246

Can you reapply sunscreen with a stick over makeup?

Sticks are convenient for reapplication, but treat using one over makeup as sunscreen application, not just a cosmetic touch up. The same general guidance applies: enough product, overlapping strokes and rubbing in for even coverage. Do not assume a light glide over foundation provides the labeled protection. SPF in makeup does not remove the need to reapply outdoors. Keeping makeup immaculate is not part of the SPF rating, however much effort went into the eyeliner.14

Who should take extra care?

For sensitive skin, choose a mineral sunscreen containing zinc oxide, titanium dioxide or both. If you take medication, ask your health care professional whether it increases sun sensitivity and requires extra precautions. Ask a doctor before applying sunscreen to a baby younger than six months; shade and protective clothing are the main protection at that age.456

Keep the stick out of excessive heat and direct sunlight. Discard expired sunscreen, or discard it three years after purchase if it has no expiry date. Pair sunscreen with shade, clothing, a hat and sunglasses, because no sunscreen blocks all UV radiation.57
