What changes in your skin at 40?

Skin becomes drier with age, and fine lines become more noticeable. Over time, loss of collagen and elastin, the structures that give skin support and stretch, contributes to wrinkles. Hormonal changes around menopause can make skin thinner and drier, but those changes do not arrive on everyone's fortieth birthday.3

Sun exposure also adds up, changing skin texture and accelerating aging. Start by preventing further damage and keeping skin comfortable rather than buying a treatment for every possible sign of aging. A routine needs a purpose for each product, not enough bottles to qualify as bathroom decor.34

Your morning routine

  1. 1Wash with warm water and a mild cleanser. Use your hands gently rather than scrubbing. Choose a hydrating cleanser for dry skin or a mild cleanser that removes oil for oily skin.
  2. 2Apply vitamin C if dark spots or signs of aging are your main concern. Put it on after cleansing and before sunscreen. This step is optional.
  3. 3Apply facial moisturizer. Moisturizer holds water in the skin and helps limit water loss, which is especially useful as skin becomes drier.
  4. 4Finish with broad spectrum, water resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Apply it to skin that clothing will not cover, 15 minutes before going outdoors. Put makeup on afterward.

Sunscreen matters more than another wrinkle cream

Sun protection is the foundation of a routine for aging skin. Broad spectrum means protection against both UVA and UVB rays. Use sunscreen throughout the year: clouds do not block all ultraviolet light, and UVA can reach you through windows, including while driving.1356

Reapply sunscreen at least every two hours outdoors, and more often after swimming, sweating or toweling. Cover exposed skin with clothing, wear a wide brimmed hat and sunglasses, and seek shade. Avoid tanning beds and sun lamps, which also accelerate skin aging. Remember your hands and neck, not just your face.13

Your evening routine

  1. 1Remove makeup and cleanse gently. Wash without scrubbing, then pat your skin dry.
  2. 2If using retinol, follow the package directions or your prescriber's instructions. General guidance is to wait 20 to 30 minutes after washing, then apply a thin, pea sized amount across your face, avoiding your eyes, mouth and nose.
  3. 3Finish with moisturizer. If retinol is too drying, you can moisturize immediately after washing and apply the retinoid 20 to 30 minutes later instead.

Should you start retinol?

Retinol is a form of vitamin A within the broader retinoid family. It increases skin cell turnover and collagen production, helping improve fine lines, texture and clogged pores. Retinol is available without a prescription; prescription retinoids are another option to discuss with a dermatologist if you need more effective treatment.7

Test a small amount on a small area first and watch for redness or itching over a couple of days. Start once every few nights rather than every night, increasing gradually as tolerated. Retinol can cause dryness, peeling, redness, itching or burning and makes sun protection especially important.7

If you have sensitive skin or are prone to allergies, a different treatment can be a better fit. Speak with your healthcare provider before using retinol during pregnancy or breastfeeding. If you already use a prescription retinoid, follow your prescriber's application instructions rather than replacing them with a general routine.7

Which extra products are worth adding?

Vitamin C can help reduce dark spots and signs of aging. It also supports protection against sun damage when used alongside sunscreen, but cannot replace sunscreen. Choose one morning serum rather than stacking several. Combining vitamin C with chemical exfoliants such as alpha hydroxy acids can interfere with the skin's pH balance.4

Toner and eye cream are optional, so turning 40 does not require opening two new departments. Toners can dry or irritate sensitive skin, and the eye area can also react to extra products. Moisturizer is a reasonable starting point instead of a separate eye cream.4

Exfoliating more often is not a shortcut to younger looking skin. Overusing exfoliants can damage the skin barrier, the protective outer layer, leaving skin raw and irritated. Avoid scrubbing, and reduce unnecessary products if your routine is making your skin uncomfortable.2

How long will results take?

Give a tolerable routine time to work. Many products for aging skin take three to four months to show their greatest benefit. Take a photo each month to help track progress instead of changing products repeatedly. Retinol takes several weeks for visible improvement, and changes in wrinkles or dark spots can take months.67

Many wrinkle products are sold as cosmetics without required human testing or FDA approval. Choose products by their intended purpose and ingredients rather than treating the words "anti aging" as proof of effectiveness.3

What is the best skin care for women at age 40?

The best routine matches your current skin type and main concern, not age alone. For dry skin, prioritize a hydrating cleanser and daily moisturizer. If you are oily or prone to clogged pores, look for products labeled noncomedogenic, meaning formulated not to clog pores. For dark spots, vitamin C or retinol can be useful additions; for mild fine lines and uneven texture, consider a retinoid.2

If dryness increases, including around menopause, adjust your moisturizing rather than continuing an uncomfortable routine unchanged. Use body moisturizer and lip balm as well as facial moisturizer. Warm rather than hot showers help avoid worsening dryness, and applying moisturizer within three minutes after a shower helps retain water. Prefer fragrance free products, especially if your skin is easily irritated.135

When should you stop or see a doctor?

Stop a product that irritates your skin. See a dermatologist if irritation persists after simplifying your routine, or if dryness is severe and itchy. Eczema or rosacea that affects your quality of life also deserves medical care rather than another cosmetic treatment.235

Check your skin monthly. Seek medical assessment for a new growth, a sore that does not heal, or a mole that bleeds, itches or changes. Warning signs include uneven halves, irregular edges, multiple colors, growth or other changes. Do not assume a new or changing spot is simply part of getting older.3
