What changes after 30?

Skin aging has two parts: natural aging and changes caused by sunlight, smoking and other environmental exposure. Natural aging affects everyone, including skin usually covered by clothing. Sun damage, also called photoaging, mainly affects exposed areas such as the face, neck and arms. It can cause roughness, uneven pigmentation and wrinkles. Your routine should respond to those changes rather than assume every person over 30 has the same skin. Moisturizer helps dry, flaky skin; treatments for pigmentation or fine lines address different concerns. Natural aging cannot be stopped, but preventable damage is a useful place to focus your effort.3

What should you use in the morning?

  1. 1Wash with a gentle cleanser and lukewarm water. Massage gently, then pat dry rather than rubbing with a towel.
  2. 2Apply vitamin C serum if you want an optional antioxidant treatment. Use it after cleansing and before moisturizer.
  3. 3Apply moisturizer. Choose one made for your skin type rather than assuming an aging routine always needs a rich cream.
  4. 4Finish with broad spectrum, water resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Apply it to skin not covered by clothing, including your neck and hands.

Use sunscreen every day, not just at the beach. Reapply every two hours while outdoors, and use shade, a hat, sunglasses and protective clothing too. A moisturizer containing sunscreen can combine steps if it offers broad spectrum protection and SPF 30 or higher; choose water resistance for outdoor use. Daily protection matters because the sun is a major cause of premature skin aging.12

What should you use at night?

  1. 1Remove makeup if you wear it. A makeup remover can help because a cleanser alone does not always remove everything. Choose fragrance free makeup wipes if you use wipes.
  2. 2Wash with a gentle cleanser suited to your skin type. Avoid rough cloths and gritty scrubbing.
  3. 3Apply retinol if you have chosen it as your treatment. Follow the product directions; prescription retinoids need their own medicine instructions.
  4. 4Apply moisturizer. If retinol irritates your skin, a thin layer of moisturizer before retinol can help buffer it.

Aim to wash morning and evening, and after heavy sweating. Gentle washing removes makeup, pollution and other substances without the irritation caused by scrubbing. Toner is optional, and alcohol based versions can dry or irritate skin. An optional toner can stay optional after 30, despite the bathroom shelf's apparent ambitions.24

Is vitamin C worth adding?

Vitamin C is an antioxidant: it counters free radicals, molecules that damage skin. It also supports collagen, the protein that gives skin structure and strength. Vitamin C can help brighten skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines. A serum is an option if you want a concentrated vitamin C product, but the step is not essential. Choose an opaque container because light can inactivate vitamin C. Avoid clear bottles and jars with wide openings. Vitamin C products can start losing effectiveness after about six months, so do not assume a bottle remains equally effective indefinitely.45

Should you start retinol after 30?

Retinol is one option for fine lines, not a requirement attached to your age. It encourages skin cell turnover and helps slow collagen breakdown. Retinol and retinaldehyde are cosmetic members of the retinoid family, a group derived from vitamin A; medicines such as tretinoin have different directions and precautions. Prescription strength is not necessary for most people. Apply retinol at night and avoid duplicating it in both a serum and moisturizer. With regular use, improvements from cosmetic retinol can begin around three months. Tretinoin can reduce fine wrinkles and some sun damage with use lasting more than six months.56

Retinoids can cause dryness, redness, peeling and sun sensitivity, and can worsen eczema. Keep medicinal retinoids away from the eyes and lips, where they can irritate. If you are pregnant or planning pregnancy, get medical advice before starting a retinoid because some topical retinoids are contraindicated in pregnancy. For a prescription, follow your prescriber's directions and the medicine information for your country rather than substituting a cosmetic routine.6

How do you adapt the routine to your skin?

  • For dry skin, use a gentle cleanser; one containing hyaluronic acid can help maintain hydration. Apply moisturizer daily.
  • For oily skin, select a moisturizer formulated for oily skin. An oil cleanser followed by a water based cleanser is an optional evening approach.
  • For sensitive skin, introduce products individually. Try a pea sized dot behind the ear along the jawline and wait a day or two before applying it across your face.
  • For uneven pigmentation, an alpha hydroxy acid cleanser, such as glycolic acid, is an option. Exfoliating cleansers are not essential, and gentle cleansing remains the starting point.

What results should you expect?

Give sunscreen and moisturizer a few weeks before deciding what still bothers you. Then choose one concern and introduce one treatment, rather than several new aging products together. Moisturizer can minimize the appearance of fine lines, but skincare delivers modest changes rather than a facelift. Effective products exist across price ranges, so a larger receipt is not a treatment plan. No single product treats every sign of aging. Select products for your skin type and budget instead of paying for a promise to reverse years overnight.1

When should you stop or see a dermatologist?

Stop a cosmetic product that stings or burns. With a prescribed aging treatment, tell your dermatologist about those symptoms so they can advise you. See a clinician for unusual skin symptoms, a growing lump or a sore that does not heal. A dermatologist can also discuss treatments if wrinkles, pigmentation or skin laxity remain bothersome.234

What else affects premature aging?

Avoid tanning, including tanning beds; use self tanner if you want a tanned appearance. Smoking speeds up skin aging, and stopping can improve how healthy skin looks. Sun protection remains worthwhile even if you already have visible sun damage, because protecting skin gives it a chance to repair some damage.2
