For the complete ingredient list, check the carton or bottle sold in your market. If you are checking for a particular ingredient, use that full list rather than the three headline actives. A headline ingredient list helps explain a serum, but it is the trailer rather than the credits.1

Why combine vitamin C, vitamin E and ferulic acid?

Vitamin C is an antioxidant: it helps neutralize free radicals, unstable molecules that can damage skin. Sunlight and pollution contribute to their formation. A stable topical vitamin C formula can help protect against photoageing, the skin changes caused by sun exposure, and improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.23

L ascorbic acid is the most studied and biologically active form of vitamin C. Its concentration matters, but so do stability and absorption. C E Ferulic's 15% concentration sits within the commonly used 10% to 20% range. Going above 20% does not increase vitamin C's biological effect and can increase irritation.4

Ferulic acid helps other antioxidants work together and helps vitamin C retain its potency. It is generally used alongside other antioxidants rather than as a separate serum. Having ferulic acid already in an antioxidant serum avoids another application step, rather than giving every antioxidant its own calendar invitation.5

Ferulic acid formulas can improve redness, pigmentation and signs of ageing. The contribution of ferulic acid alone remains uncertain because many formulas combine several active ingredients. For visible wrinkle changes, think in months rather than days: general vitamin C trials have found improvements over 12 weeks and six months. Those are not fixed deadlines for C E Ferulic.46

Does C E Ferulic contain fragrance or alcohol?

SkinCeuticals lists C E Ferulic as free of fragrance, alcohol, parabens, dyes and silicones. Fragrance free does not mean scent free: the vitamins have a natural smell. SkinCeuticals recommends the serum for normal, dry and sensitive skin.1

How do you use C E Ferulic?

  1. 1Cleanse in the morning and apply toner if it is part of your routine.
  2. 2Apply 4 to 5 drops to a dry face, neck and chest, once daily.
  3. 3Apply other skincare products afterwards and finish with sunscreen.

SkinCeuticals places C E Ferulic in the morning and retinol or a retinoid in the evening. Use an opened bottle within 3 to 6 months. The serum can be clear, pale yellow or amber when opened and can darken with use. After laser treatment, ask your treating clinician when to introduce it.1
