What actually differs?

The percentages describe different ingredients, so 96% snail mucin is not a stronger dose of hyaluronic acid than 2%. COSRX's essence already contains a hyaluronic acid ingredient, sodium hyaluronate; the two options overlap rather than offering completely separate kinds of hydration.12

Which should you choose?

• Choose The Ordinary Original Formulation if you want a rich hydration serum with a stated standalone price. The brand lists it for all skin types and identifies dehydration and dryness as its targets.
• Choose COSRX Snail 96 if you specifically want a snail based essence. Its formula includes sodium hyaluronate, panthenol and allantoin alongside snail secretion filtrate.
• Consider The Ordinary's version with ceramides if the original sounds too rich. The updated formula has an additional form of hyaluronic acid and a lighter feel.
• Consider COSRX Advanced Snail Radiance Dual Essence if you want a different formula aimed at hydration and radiance. It contains 74.3% Triple Snail Complex and 5% niacinamide, plus glutathione.

Radiance Dual Essence costs $44 for 80 ml, and COSRX describes its finish as refreshing and nonsticky. Pump it, mix the two essences, then apply gently and tap into the skin. Dual Essence requires mixing after pumping, so the bottle has created a small administrative task.3

How do you fit either into your routine?

Hyaluronic acid helps retain water, and hydrated skin can look smoother. Despite its name, hyaluronic acid moisturizes rather than exfoliates, so the word 'acid' has arrived dressed for the wrong job. For dry skin in cold, dry weather, a cream, oil or balm can be more useful than relying on a light hydration layer alone.456

What if The Ordinary irritates your skin?

The Ordinary advises patch testing before use and applying only to unbroken skin. Apply a small amount to clean skin on the upper forearm, keep it dry, and rinse after 24 hours. Do not use it if redness, burning, itching, blistering or irritation develops. If irritation occurs during normal use, rinse off, stop using the serum and consult a physician.1
