What does aftershave do for your skin?

A razor moving across skin can cause tiny cracks in the outer skin layer, moisture loss and inflammation. A moisturizing aftershave acts as an emollient, a product that softens and moisturizes skin. Applied after shaving, a hydrating lotion or gel can help soothe skin and support recovery of its protective barrier. These benefits are useful when shaving leaves skin dry or uncomfortable, but they are not unique to aftershave.13

Which kind of aftershave should you choose?

Aftershave can also mean a fragrance, so the name is doing rather more work than the definition. For moisture and comfort, choose a moisturizing formula without alcohol or fragrance, particularly if your skin is dry, sensitive or already irritated. Fragrances can cause irritation or an allergic skin reaction. "Unscented" is not the same as having no fragrance materials: unscented products can contain chemicals that mask other ingredients' smells. If fragrance triggers a reaction, pay attention to the ingredients rather than relying on the lack of an obvious scent.24

How should you use aftershave?

  1. 1Finish shaving, then rinse your skin with cold water to help reduce inflammation.
  2. 2Apply a moisturizing aftershave or a plain moisturizer to rehydrate the shaved area. Use it as the finishing step after shaving, whether you shave in the morning or evening.
  3. 3If skin feels irritated, hold a cool, wet washcloth against the area for relief. Aloe vera gel is another option for easing discomfort while skin heals.
  4. 4If razor burn develops, pause shaving until the irritation clears. Continuing to shave irritated skin can make it worse.

How quickly should skin feel better?

Moisturizing and cooling the area can ease discomfort while skin recovers. Razor burn usually lasts a few hours to a few days and often clears on its own. Aloe vera can provide cooling relief, but it is not a cure. Do not keep applying an aftershave that causes irritation; avoid the irritating product and let the area recover.14

Can aftershave prevent razor burn?

Moisturizing belongs in a shaving routine, but prevention also depends on how you shave. Wet skin and hair first, ideally after a shower, and use shaving cream or gel. For very dry or sensitive skin, choose a shaving cream labelled for sensitive skin. Shave in the direction of hair growth, use light strokes and avoid repeatedly passing over the same area. Rinse the razor after each swipe and replace disposable blades after five to seven shaves. Store the razor somewhere dry. If you have acne, shave lightly and never try to shave off spots, because shaving can worsen acne.36

What if you get bumps rather than razor burn?

Raised, itchy bumps can be ingrown hairs, where hair grows back into the skin. Coarse or curly hair makes these more likely. If ingrown hairs recur, avoid shaving too closely, leave at least 1 mm of stubble and avoid daily shaving where possible. An electric razor is another option. Do not scratch, pick or squeeze the bumps, because doing so can damage skin and lead to infection.5

When should you get medical help?

See a healthcare professional if irritation is worsening or has not cleared within a few days. Get medical help for an ingrown hair that is very painful, hot or swollen, or if you develop a high temperature, chills or feel very unwell. These symptoms need assessment rather than another application of aftershave.45
