How can you tell if you have combination skin?
The forehead, nose and chin together are called the T zone. Oily areas can look shiny, have larger pores and develop blemishes. Dry areas can feel tight or look flaky and rough. The clue is the difference between areas, rather than how oily your face feels as a whole.13
Try this simple check:
- 1Wash your face gently and pat it dry.
- 2Wait about 30 minutes without applying skincare products.
- 3Compare your forehead, nose, chin and cheeks. Notice which areas feel oily, dry or neither. Blotting paper can help show where oil collects, but you do not need it.
There is no universal skin type test, so use the check as a guide rather than a diagnosis. Combination skin describes a pattern, not a shopping list with compulsory matching bottles.2
How should you care for combination skin?
Care for each area according to what it needs. Different areas can need different products, which is inconvenient for the idea that one bottle should run the whole operation.2
- 1Cleanse gently in the morning and at bedtime, and after exercise. Use warm water, massage gently, rinse thoroughly and pat dry. Repeated washing to remove every trace of oil can leave skin excessively dry.
- 2Moisturize dry areas morning and evening. Apply moisturizer while skin is still damp to help hold water in the skin. A cream is thicker and more hydrating than a lotion or gel.
- 3Adjust moisturizer on oily areas. A lighter gel is an option if those areas need moisture; you can skip moisturizer there if they do not. Your dry cheeks and oily nose do not have to receive identical care.
- 4Apply broad spectrum SPF 30 or higher sunscreen during the day. Sun protection belongs in the routine regardless of which areas are oily or dry.
Do not exfoliate dry, peeling patches to remove the flakes; moisturize them instead. If you use products for oily areas, keep them to those areas rather than automatically applying them across dry cheeks. Using an acne cleanser alongside acne treatments left on the skin can cause excessive dryness and irritation.134
Can combination skin change?
Yes. Seasons, age, hormones, stress and medications can affect your skin type. Pregnancy and breastfeeding can also change the pattern. Adjust care to how your skin currently looks and feels rather than keeping the same routine indefinitely.2
What if your skin also stings or feels irritated?
Combination skin can also be sensitive: sensitivity is separate from oil production. Burning, itching or redness needs attention rather than being treated as another oily or dry zone. Avoid fragrances and harsh products if your skin is sensitive. See a dermatologist if dryness does not improve, or becomes painful, cracked, bleeding or very irritating.24
