What can mandelic acid help with?
Professional mandelic and salicylic acid peels can improve mild to moderate acne and postacne pigmentation, meaning dark marks remaining after spots clear. These treatments have been used in people with darker skin tones as well as in people receiving acne medicines. Dark marks and indented scars are different problems: improvement in pigmentation does not mean a peel will remove a dent.12
More generally, exfoliating acids remove dead surface cells, helping skin look smoother, brighter and more even in colour. Chemical peels are also used for rough texture, dullness and fine lines. Those are broader benefits of exfoliation and peeling, not a reason to expect every mandelic product to do every job; an acid name is not an entire treatment plan.34
How long does mandelic acid take to work?
Think in weeks and repeated treatments, not one application. A course of six professional peels containing 20% salicylic acid and 10% mandelic acid, given every two weeks, improved acne and dark marks by 12 weeks. Another professional treatment series using 20% of each acid showed improvement after four sessions. These are combination peel results, not a timetable for a mandelic serum. A first superficial peel can produce little visible change, so one appointment is a poor audition for the whole treatment.125
How should you use mandelic acid?
Separate a routine skincare product from a chemical peel. The concentrations above describe professional treatments, not strengths to copy at home. Buy and use a chemical peel only with supervision from a licensed, trained provider. For routine exfoliating skincare, the following is general acid guidance rather than a mandelic specific dosing schedule.4
- 1Use a leave on exfoliating acid at night. The exact frequency depends on the preparation; there is no single schedule for every mandelic formula.
- 2Alternate exfoliating acid applications with retinoid or vitamin C preparations rather than putting every active into the same application.
- 3Protect your face the following morning and every day with SPF 30 or higher sunscreen. Exfoliating acids can make skin more vulnerable to sun damage.
Who should be careful?
Sensitive skin still needs caution: too much exfoliation can irritate skin and remove structures that retain water and healthy fats. Darker skin has a greater risk of pigment changes after a chemical peel, so professional treatment needs careful selection. If you take oral isotretinoin, let your prescribing dermatologist decide whether a superficial peel belongs in your treatment. Superficial and deeper peels have different risks, and the medicines should not be adjusted yourself. Safety during pregnancy or breastfeeding is not settled for these mandelic combination peels; the 12 week treatment trial excluded both groups.1235
What should you expect after a peel?
A superficial peel can cause mild redness, occasional swelling and peeling. Redness and swelling usually resolve within 48 hours. Moisturise, protect treated skin from the sun and do not pick peeling skin, because picking delays healing and can cause scars. Report problems promptly to the treating clinician, especially persistent darkening or suspected infection.5
Can mandelic acid replace acne treatment?
Not as a default choice. Acne treatments such as benzoyl peroxide and topical retinoids have stronger support than chemical peels. For severe acne, or acne that persists despite standard treatment, a dermatologist can assess prescription options. A mandelic peel can be an additional option, rather than the foundation of an acne routine.7
