How to start treating nose blackheads
Choose one starting treatment rather than buying every option below, because a bathroom shelf is not a treatment plan. Salicylic acid removes dead skin cells that contribute to clogged pores; retinoids treat existing plugs and help prevent new ones.4
- 1Cleanse gently. Use warm water and a mild facial cleanser, without scrubbing the nose. A salicylic acid wash can be your treatment cleanser once daily; 2% is a starting strength, and a lower strength is an option if it dries your skin.
- 2If you choose a retinoid, apply it in the evening as directed. Spread a thin layer over the affected area rather than treating only individual visible dots. Adapalene is available without a prescription in the US; tretinoin requires a prescription.
- 3Use moisturizer regularly. Retinoids can cause dryness and peeling. For a prescribed retinoid, ask your dermatologist before changing the amount, frequency or order of application.
- 4Protect your skin during the day. Use a sunscreen that does not clog pores and offers broad spectrum protection, SPF 30 or higher and water resistance.
What if your skin is sensitive?
Azelaic acid is a gentler option that helps clear pores and reduce inflammation, although it targets blackheads less strongly than salicylic acid or retinoids. Retinoids can worsen eczema and cause redness, peeling and irritation, especially near the eyes or lips. If irritation persists, ask your dermatologist to adjust the treatment rather than pushing through it. Some topical retinoids are contraindicated in pregnancy, so do not start one during pregnancy without medical advice.126
How long does treatment take?
Give blackhead treatment six to eight weeks before assessing progress. Retinoids can take 12 weeks or longer to show improvement, so that first check is not necessarily the final result. Treatment for clogged pores often needs to continue for months or longer. If blackheads remain after six to eight weeks, a dermatologist can assess whether you need prescription treatment or professional extraction.567
Should you use pore strips or an extractor?
Pore strips offer temporary removal rather than an ongoing solution, a distinction that makes less impressive packaging copy. Their adhesive lifts congestion out of pores, but strips can cause dryness and irritation. Do not squeeze blackheads or attempt deep extraction yourself: pressure can push material deeper, damage skin and cause scarring. A dermatologist or medical aesthetician can remove embedded plugs with an extraction tool.14
Why do you get blackheads on your nose?
Blackheads form when excess oil and dead skin cells clog a pore that stays open. The nose and chin are common sites. Increased oil production and hormonal changes contribute, and blackheads can occur in adults as well as teenagers. The dark dots are not dirt, so harder scrubbing will not solve the blockage and can worsen acne.47
What can you use for blackheads on your face?
The same treatments work for blackheads elsewhere on the face: salicylic acid products or a topical retinoid applied across the affected area. Benzoyl peroxide helps reduce acne causing bacteria when pimples accompany blackheads, but it does not directly clear plugs like salicylic acid or retinoids. Choose makeup and skincare labelled noncomedogenic, meaning designed not to clog pores, and remove makeup at the end of the day.134
