Why would a hydrating serum feel tacky?

Hyaluronic acid is a polymer, a large molecule made of repeating units. It acts as a humectant, meaning it retains water in the skin. Hyaluronic acid also has viscous and adhesive properties, which provide a plausible explanation for tackiness. Adhesion simply means components sticking together. That is a general explanation of the ingredient's behaviour, not a diagnosis of what is happening with your particular serum.134

Check whether your bottle says "with Ceramides" or identifies the original formulation. The original and newer versions have different texture descriptions, so the shared name is doing more work than it should. The newer Canadian formula is designed to absorb quickly and dry without residue.2

How should you apply it?

  1. 1Cleanse your face.
  2. 2Apply a few drops of the serum. The Ordinary specifies a few drops, not a full dropper.
  3. 3Follow with your cream or richer oil. The serum goes before these products.

The Ordinary directs morning and evening use for the version with ceramides. If you have been using more than a few drops, return to that amount before deciding whether you dislike the formula's finish.2

Should you follow it with moisturiser?

For dry skin, a cream adds something useful beyond a water retaining serum. Moisturisers can combine humectants, emollients that soften skin, and occlusives that form a protective surface layer to reduce water loss. These functions complement each other: attracting water and slowing its escape are different jobs.5

Apply moisturiser while skin is still damp after washing. This is general dry skin guidance, not a special trick proven to remove this serum's stickiness. For dry skin, choose a gentle, fragrance free cream or ointment rather than a lotion; creams and ointments provide more moisture.6

What should you expect?

The Ordinary gives a first week timeframe for improved hydration with the ceramide version, with lasting results after four weeks. Choose by comfort as well as hydration.25

When should you stop using it?

If irritation occurs, rinse off the serum, stop using it and consult a doctor. The Ordinary advises a patch test before use and application only to healthy skin.2

Tell a dermatologist if skincare products cause burning, stinging or irritation. If dryness continues despite moisturising and gentle care, have it assessed rather than adding more serum.6
