Why a hydrating serum can leave you feeling dry
Hyaluronic acid is a humectant, meaning it attracts and holds water. Keeping that water from evaporating is another part of moisturizing: occlusive ingredients form a barrier that helps retain moisture. If you use the serum alone, adding a suitable moisturizer is the first practical change.13
The explanation that hyaluronic acid steals water from deeper skin in dry weather is not well supported. Dry air itself can cause dryness, so feeling tight after application does not identify that particular mechanism.24
Check what happens before the serum, too. Cleansers can remove natural skin oils, hot water removes them more readily, and vigorous towel rubbing can disturb the skin barrier, the outer layer that limits water loss. Retinol and glycolic acid can also cause dryness and irritation. If your skin already feels tight after washing, the serum is not the only step worth examining.15
Heating and air conditioning can both dry the air, so the thermostat is not a skincare consultant. Low humidity can increase dryness even when your products have not changed. A humidifier can help prevent and treat dry skin.5
How to apply The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid
The Ordinary sells both Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 Original Formulation and a version with Ceramides; these are different formulas, so check which bottle you have.2
- 1Cleanse gently. Use warm rather than hot water and pat your skin dry instead of rubbing.
- 2Apply a few drops to clean, dry, unbroken skin. The Ordinary advises morning and evening use.
- 3Pat the serum in lightly and let it dry naturally. Too much can leave residue, and excessive rubbing can cause stickiness.
- 4Apply moisturizer after the serum. The Ordinary places hyaluronic acid serums before water free serums and finishes the routine with moisturizer.
You do not need to wet your face again to follow The Ordinary's directions. General hyaluronic acid advice often favors damp skin followed immediately by moisturizer; The Ordinary advises dry skin and says damp application does not necessarily improve hydration. For this product, follow the brand's directions.12
Which moisturizer should you use afterward?
For genuinely dry skin, choose a fragrance free cream rather than a light lotion. Creams preserve more water than lotions; ointments are thicker still. Look for moisture retaining ingredients such as petrolatum, mineral oil or dimethicone. If only parts of your face are dry, concentrate richer moisturizer on those areas rather than coating oily areas equally. Some occlusive barrier creams can aggravate facial acne.1356
How soon should dryness improve?
Topical hyaluronic acid can improve skin hydration. General expectations include less dryness and mild softening of fine lines within about one to two weeks. That is a useful timeframe for hydration benefits, not a reason to continue through irritation. Avoid exfoliating dry, peeling skin; moisturizing is the more useful response.167
When should you stop using it?
If irritation occurs, rinse thoroughly, stop the serum and consult a physician. Dryness accompanied by redness, itching or a rash can involve a reaction to a cosmetic, not just insufficient moisture. Arrange a dermatologist appointment if dryness persists, keeps returning or becomes painful, cracked, bleeding or very irritating.246
