Which BYOMA SPF should you choose?

UK productLabelled SPFListed price
Ultralight Face Fluid SPF3030£14.99
Ultralight Face Fluid SPF5050£14.99

Both UK face fluids are listed at £14.99, so the price tag has declined to break the tie. BYOMA's UK shop also lists the SPF50 fluid among its bestsellers. The dollar priced moisturiser range lists the Gel Cream at $14.99 and Rich Cream at $15.99; those are different products, not alternative prices for the UK SPF fluids.34

SPF means sun protection factor and describes protection against sunburn from UVB rays. Both BYOMA fluids meet the general minimum of SPF30, but check the exact bottle for UVA protection, water resistance, ingredients and application directions before choosing. The product names alone do not settle those details.2

Look for protection against both UVA and UVB rays, often called broad spectrum, as well as water resistance. SPF30 filters out 97% of UVB rays. No sunscreen filters out all UVB rays, so shade and protective clothing still matter. A higher SPF number does not remove the need to reapply.25

Where does your BYOMA moisturiser fit?

BYOMA describes the Gel Cream as an ultra lightweight option for oily or breakout prone skin and people who prefer a weightless moisturiser. The Rich Cream is intended for drier skin that needs a richer texture. The Gel Cream and Rich Cream serve different texture preferences, rather than making the bathroom shelf a personality test.6

BYOMA directs you to use either moisturiser morning and night. If you use BYOMA Hydrating Serum, the brand places it before your chosen moisturiser. Choose between the creams for hydration and texture; assess sunscreen separately for its labelled protection and directions.6

How should you apply sunscreen?

These are general sunscreen steps, not BYOMA specific directions.

  1. 1Apply sunscreen about 15 minutes before going outdoors, rather than waiting until you are already in the sun.
  2. 2Use at least one teaspoon for your face, approximately enough to cover the length of your index and middle fingers. Rub it thoroughly into your skin.
  3. 3Cover exposed areas beyond your face, including your neck and ears. Most adults need at least one ounce to cover all skin not covered by clothing.
  4. 4Reapply every two hours outdoors and immediately after swimming or sweating. Reapply after towelling off, too.
25

Use sunscreen when going outside even on cloudy days and in winter. Applying too little, missing reapplication or using expired sunscreen can leave you inadequately protected.5

What if you have sensitive skin?

For sensitive skin, dermatologists recommend mineral sunscreens containing zinc oxide, titanium dioxide or both. Use the actual ingredient list to identify the sunscreen type rather than guessing from the BYOMA name. A "sensitive skin" claim has no defined FDA meaning on US sunscreen labels.2

If you think you have developed sun damaged skin, a dermatologist can examine it and advise you.5
