Advanced Repair Balm is the Australian product name; the UK product is called Advanced Repair Ointment, while the US Healing Ointment has a different ingredient list. Balm, ointment and healing ointment are not a naming system designed to make shopping quick.123
What does the balm do?
Petrolatum forms a barrier over the skin to reduce moisture loss. Three ceramides support the skin's protective barrier, while hyaluronic acid helps attract and retain moisture. The formula also contains panthenol and vitamin E. The Australian balm is fragrance free, lanolin free and alcohol free. Check your package for the current ingredient list, because formulas can change.14
Expect immediate soothing of dry areas and a protective layer lasting up to eight hours. That describes comfort and protection, not a deadline for cracked skin to heal. Ointments sit on the skin's surface to hold water in, making them useful when a usual cream or lotion leaves skin feeling dry.15
How do you apply it?
- 1Cleanse gently. After bathing or washing, pat rather than rub your skin dry.
- 2Apply your regular moisturiser. For the body, apply cream or lotion while skin is still damp.
- 3Follow with the balm on dry or rough areas. Smooth it gently over the skin rather than rubbing vigorously.
- 4Reapply as needed when skin feels dry. Avoid direct contact with eyes; rinse thoroughly with water if contact occurs.
You can use the balm morning or evening. CeraVe's facial routine puts it after an AM moisturiser with SPF in the morning and after a PM moisturiser at night. For lips, apply as needed during the day and before bed. For dry hands, moisturise again after washing. General ointment guidance favours nighttime use if a thicker texture is less convenient during the day.1267
Should you choose the balm or a cream?
| Option | Texture and role | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Advanced Repair Balm | Thicker petrolatum based ointment that forms a protective layer | Targeted care for very dry, cracked or rough areas, after moisturiser |
| CeraVe Moisturising Cream | Lighter cream texture for lasting hydration | Broader daily moisturising for dry to very dry skin |
CeraVe describes the balm as having a non greasy feel, but ointments are generally thicker and can feel greasier than creams. The word balm does not make it a lightweight lotion; the product name has declined to describe the texture.15
Who should be careful?
The Australian balm is suitable for sensitive and mild eczema prone skin, but it is not an eczema treatment. Consult a dermatologist for moderate to severe eczema or before introducing it for a diagnosed skin condition. For babies, CeraVe limits use to the nappy area from one month of age and advises consulting a dermatologist before use on children.1
Patch test before wider facial use. CeraVe's UK ointment advice recommends avoiding application directly to spots because it can cause further congestion. General ointment guidance also advises against use on weeping eczema. A non comedogenic label does not mean an ointment is the right choice for every facial area.57
If you use a steroid cream or another skin treatment, leave 20 to 30 minutes between that treatment and an emollient, and ask your doctor which goes first. Keep emollients away from flames and cigarettes: residue on clothing, bedding and dressings makes fabrics easier to ignite, even after washing.7
Stop using a lip product that causes stinging or tingling. Tell a dermatologist if moisturiser causes burning, stinging or irritation, and seek advice if dryness persists despite regular moisturising. Persistent dryness can need treatment beyond another layer of balm.6
