A humectant is an ingredient that attracts water, such as glycerin or hyaluronic acid. An emollient helps soften skin, while an occlusive helps keep moisture from escaping. These roles complement ceramides rather than replace them: hydration needs both water and a barrier that holds onto it. Ceramides are fats naturally found in the outer skin layer, and moisturizing products can help replenish them.34

The table covers the main moisturizing ingredients, not the complete formula. CeraVe updates ingredient lists regularly, so use the list on your own bottle when checking suitability, because a familiar label is not a formula freeze. If you are avoiding a particular ingredient, check the entire package list rather than only the ingredients highlighted on the front.1

Does CeraVe PM contain fragrance, and who does it suit?

The UK lotion is fragrance free and labeled noncomedogenic, meaning it is formulated not to clog pores. CeraVe lists it for normal to dry skin. Fragrance free formulas are useful options for dry or sensitive skin because fragrance can cause irritation. Noncomedogenic formulas are also worth considering for oily or acne prone skin, but choose the texture around how much moisture you need.145

The UK product is called a night cream but has a lightweight lotion texture, because apparently one texture needed two job titles. If your skin remains very dry with a lotion, a cream or ointment generally retains more moisture. CeraVe Moisturizing Cream is a separate, richer face and body product containing petrolatum; it is not PM in a larger container.146

How should you apply CeraVe PM?

  1. 1Cleanse your face. General moisturizing guidance favors applying moisturizer while skin is still slightly damp.
  2. 2Apply any other nighttime skincare products in their usual order, progressing from lighter formulas to heavier ones.
  3. 3Apply CeraVe PM liberally to your face and neck at night, as the UK directions specify, or follow your physician's directions.

CeraVe PM is intended to moisturize overnight and help support the protective barrier. The UK lotion offers continuous hydration for up to 24 hours through controlled ingredient release. That describes hydration duration, not a deadline for resolving a skin concern. Make moisturizing a regular habit; general facial skincare guidance recommends moisturizing morning and night.15

Is CeraVe moisturizer good?

CeraVe PM is a reasonable choice if you want a lightweight, fragrance free evening moisturizer with water attracting ingredients and ceramides. Those are useful moisturizing ingredients, but the right CeraVe product depends on texture and dryness. If dryness persists or becomes painful, cracked, bleeding or very irritating, see a dermatologist. Excessively dry skin sometimes needs a prescribed moisturizer or treatment for an underlying condition.147

What are the ingredients in CeraVe AM and PM moisturizers?

AM and PM both feature ceramides, hyaluronic acid and niacinamide. The US AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion with SPF 30 adds broad spectrum sun protection, while PM is the nighttime moisturizing option. For exact sunscreen ingredients, use the label on your particular AM bottle rather than treating every AM version as interchangeable. In a morning routine, follow moisturizer without SPF with a separate broad spectrum sunscreen rated SPF 30 or higher.145
