Which CeraVe products should you choose?

Choose by the product's role rather than treating every serum as another required step. CeraVe uses 'renewing' on more than one product, so the name does less sorting than you might hope. The serum prices below are listed in US dollars for CeraVe's US range. Formulas are updated, so use the ingredient list on the package you buy.5

ProductFormula and roleListed US price
Skin Renewing Retinol SerumContains retinol, niacinamide, ceramides and hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid. Consider it when fine lines and texture are your main concerns.$24.99
Resurfacing Retinol SerumContains retinol, niacinamide and ceramides. Its stated focus is marks left after acne and visible pores.$21.99
Skin Renewing Vitamin C SerumContains ascorbic acid, a form of vitamin C, plus ceramides and sodium hyaluronate. Its stated focus is brightening.$28.99
Hydrating Hyaluronic Acid SerumContains sodium hyaluronate, glycerin, panthenol and ceramides. Choose it for a hyaluronic acid serum step rather than a retinol step.$22.99

For an aging focused routine, Skin Renewing Retinol Serum is the more direct match; choose Resurfacing Retinol Serum if marks left after acne and pores are also priorities. Both contain retinol, but the ingredient lists do not give a retinol percentage. Do not choose between them on the assumption that one is stronger. Vitamin C is a separate brightening option, not a reason to buy both retinol serums.5

What can retinol do for aging skin?

Retinol is a vitamin A derivative that encourages the shedding of dead skin cells. It helps improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, uneven tone and texture. Retinol also acts deeper in the skin to support collagen and elastin, the proteins that provide structure and elasticity. These are general retinol benefits, not a promise that a particular CeraVe serum will erase wrinkles. Wrinkles are a normal part of aging, and treating them is optional.46

How to use CeraVe products in the morning

  1. 1Wash with a gentle cleanser and gently pat your face dry.
  2. 2Apply your treatment after cleansing. If brightening is your priority, a vitamin C serum can go here; morning use provides brightening benefits and antioxidant protection against environmental stressors.
  3. 3Apply moisturizer and sunscreen. Choose sunscreen with broad spectrum protection against UVA and UVB rays, SPF 30 or higher, and water resistance.
  4. 4Apply makeup afterward, if you wear it.

How to use CeraVe products at night

  1. 1Cleanse gently and pat your face dry.
  2. 2Apply your retinol treatment, keeping it away from your eyes and lips. Evening is the preferred time for a retinol serum because sunlight breaks retinol down and reduces its effectiveness.
  3. 3Follow with moisturizer. CeraVe tells you to apply Skin Renewing Night Cream in small dots where needed around the face, then gently smooth until absorbed.
  4. 4Use the night cream nightly before bedtime. Retinol frequency depends on tolerance; reduce applications if dryness or irritation develops.

What does Skin Renewing Night Cream add?

Skin Renewing Night Cream is an intensely moisturizing, non greasy cream that CeraVe positions for all skin types. Its hyaluronic acid attracts moisture and helps skin retain it, while ceramides help restore and maintain the skin barrier, the outer layer that keeps moisture in. The formula also contains niacinamide and peptides intended to improve the appearance of tired looking skin. CeraVe describes its delivery system as continually releasing moisturizing ingredients for 24 hour hydration.25

A night cream earns its place by moisturizing, not by having a bedtime in its name. CeraVe describes this cream as improving the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and refreshing tired looking skin overnight. Treat the overnight claim as a claim about appearance and hydration, rather than expecting established wrinkles to disappear by morning. The cream is fragrance free, but that is not a reason to ignore discomfort after applying it.2

Sunscreen is part of the aging skin routine

Sunscreen helps prevent premature wrinkles and age spots caused by unprotected ultraviolet exposure. Sunscreen belongs in an aging skin routine even though it lacks the dramatic vocabulary of a renewing serum. UVA rays contribute to premature aging and can pass through window glass. For sensitive skin, mineral sunscreens containing zinc oxide, titanium dioxide or both are recommended options. A cream sunscreen can suit dry skin and facial use.7

Apply sunscreen to dry skin 15 minutes before going outdoors. For the face, use at least 1 teaspoon, and remember your ears and neck. Reapply approximately every two hours outdoors and after swimming or sweating, following the bottle's directions. A moisturizer with SPF still needs reapplication. Add shade and protective clothing rather than relying on sunscreen alone. If dark spots are a priority, a tinted sunscreen containing iron oxide also helps protect against visible light that can worsen pigmentation.7

What if retinol irritates your skin?

Mild flaking or redness can occur when starting retinol. If irritation develops, space applications out until your skin adjusts. CeraVe suggests that this can mean every third evening, then every other night, and eventually every night as tolerance increases. Avoid piling on exfoliating ingredients alongside retinol. Using several aging treatments can irritate skin and make signs of aging more noticeable. Morning vitamin C and evening retinol are a possible pairing, not two compulsory purchases.14

If you use prescription skin treatment, discuss whether a retinoid product is appropriate with your healthcare provider rather than adding another treatment automatically. See a dermatologist if you have questions or concerns about your routine, including irritation. If your main concern is deep wrinkles that remain when your face is at rest, discuss your goals with a clinician; those wrinkles can require treatments beyond a topical skincare routine.16
