Which CeraVe cleanser are you using?

The Canadian SA Cleanser is a foaming gel containing salicylic acid, niacinamide, three ceramides and hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid. Its listed formula does not give a salicylic acid percentage. Acne Control Cleanser separately lists 2% salicylic acid. SA Cleanser and Acne Control Cleanser are different products, despite names that look like they were filed in the same drawer. Check your bottle's ingredient list and directions rather than borrowing the strength from another CeraVe product.3

How to use it on your body

  1. 1Follow your bottle's directions for frequency. CeraVe describes the Canadian SA Cleanser as a daily exfoliating cleanser, but introduction and frequency should reflect your skin's tolerance.
  2. 2Apply gently with your hands. General acne cleansing guidance favours gentle circular motions rather than scrubbing.
  3. 3Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water, then gently blot dry with a clean towel. Do not leave the cleanser on as though it were a lotion.
  4. 4Choose an oil free, noncomedogenic moisturizer, meaning one formulated not to clog pores. On exposed body skin outdoors, use water resistant, broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher.

A shower after exercise is a useful place for body cleansing. Change out of sweaty clothes promptly and wash workout clothes after each use. Sweat itself does not directly cause acne; a buildup of dirt, oil and bacteria can contribute. Avoid loofahs, back brushes and abrasive scrubs on acne prone areas.25

What if the cleanser is not enough?

For mild to moderate back acne, benzoyl peroxide washes have direct treatment support: they kill acne causing bacteria and can reduce flares with daily use. CeraVe's US Acne Foaming Cream Wash contains 10% benzoyl peroxide and is intended for face and body acne. The product name identifies a cleanser, not a complete acne routine, which is quite a lot of responsibility to assign to a bottle. If you need another treatment, choose a coordinated routine rather than stacking medicated products yourself.126

As a general back acne treatment timeline, improvement can begin in six to eight weeks, while complete clearing can take three to four months. This is not a promised timeline for SA Cleanser. See a dermatologist if there is no difference after six to eight weeks, or sooner for deep, painful acne. A consistent routine helps control acne, which makes its least photogenic feature one of its most useful.25

CeraVe SA Cleanser for blackheads

Blackheads are open pores plugged with excess oil and dead skin, and they commonly affect the back and chest as well as the face. Salicylic acid cleansers are a treatment option because the ingredient helps prevent dead skin cells from clogging follicles. Do not squeeze blackheads: picking can worsen acne and cause inflammation or scarring. Deep, embedded blackheads are best removed by a medical professional.57

CeraVe SA Cleanser for sensitive skin

Sensitive skin can react more easily to exfoliating ingredients, even in a formula focused on supporting the skin barrier. Introduce the cleanser gradually and adjust frequency to your response. Avoid salicylic acid on irritated, infected or reddened skin. Stop using it and contact a doctor for moderate or severe irritation, flushing, or unusually warm, red skin.13

If you use prescription acne products, benzoyl peroxide or topical retinoids on the same area, ask your doctor before adding salicylic acid. Avoid combining it with other peeling products or alcohol containing preparations unless directed. During pregnancy or breastfeeding, discuss salicylic acid use with your doctor before starting.1
