CeraVe's US Foaming Facial Cleanser and its Africa market Foaming Cleanser have different ingredient lists, so compare the bottle sold where you shop. The Africa version is described as fragrance free and soap free, suitable for sensitive skin that is normal to oily, and usable on the face and body. CeraVe tells you to check your package for the current ingredients.145

Which should you pick?

CeraVe is the straightforward fit if your priority is removing excess oil, dirt and makeup while helping maintain moisture. For sensitive, normal to oily skin, the Africa version specifically includes that skin type in its intended use. If your skin is dry or already stings during cleansing, prioritise a comfortable, mild formula rather than choosing by foam or product name.125

Does low pH make COSRX better?

Normal skin has a pH of about 4.5 to 5.75. Alkaline soap can irritate sensitive skin, while synthetic detergent cleansers can be formulated closer to skin's natural pH. That makes pH relevant, but not a complete ranking system. Cleansing agents, fragrance and other additives can also cause irritation. Judge the whole formula and your skin's response, not just the words on the front.2

How should you use the cleanser?

These are CeraVe's US directions:

  1. 1Wet your skin with lukewarm water.
  2. 2Massage the cleanser gently in circular motions as it foams. Do not scrub.
  3. 3Rinse well and pat dry.
  4. 4Apply moisturizer afterwards. During the day, use broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher.
46

For oily skin, cleanse up to twice daily and after sweating. CeraVe's Africa directions specify morning and evening; follow the current COSRX pack for its directions. Cleansing goes before treatments and moisturizer in COSRX's basic routine, which has three stages rather than requiring a bathroom shelf with its own organisational chart.356

What should you expect, and when should you stop?

The immediate job is removing surface oil, dirt and makeup. Overwashing can remove the surface oil film and increase water loss, leaving skin dry or irritated. If cleansing causes irritation, stop the product or use it less often. Do not respond to persistent oiliness by scrubbing harder or using a harsher wash: harsh cleansing can trigger increased oil production. If oiliness, blackheads or acne remain difficult to manage, see a dermatologist.26
