What are the side effects of COSRX snail mucin?

Which COSRX snail product are you using?

COSRX sells snail essence, cream, cleanser and masks, so the snail has a larger product portfolio than the name suggests. Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence and Advanced Snail Radiance Dual Essence are different products. The Dual Essence contains 74.3% Triple Snail Complex and 5% niacinamide, plus other ingredients. If you develop a reaction, identify the exact bottle rather than assuming every snail product has the same formula.45

What does a reaction look like?

Contact dermatitis is skin inflammation caused by contact with an irritant or something you are allergic to. These are general signs to watch for, not a prediction that a COSRX product will cause all of them. A reaction can include:6

• Itching, tenderness, burning or stinging.
• A swollen rash that looks red, purple or darker than your usual skin tone.
• Dryness, cracking, flaking or scaling.
• Raised bumps, hives or fluid filled blisters.
• Oozing and crusting.

Irritation can appear within minutes, while an allergic rash can take hours or days. Reactions can also develop after repeated use, even when earlier applications caused no problems. New bumps are not automatically acne: contact dermatitis can also produce clusters of bumps or blisters, especially with itching, burning or scaling.36

A reported reaction involved a teenager applying a COSRX product containing 96% snail secretion filtrate to her lips multiple times daily. Pain, swelling, crusting and oozing began a few weeks after she started. Keep the product on facial skin and off the moist surfaces of the lips and mouth; the facial essence is not a lip treatment.1

How to test it before using it on your face

A small area test is particularly useful if you have sensitive skin or known allergies. Natural ingredients can still cause allergies. Use this general skincare testing method before introducing a new COSRX snail product:3

1. 1Choose a small area of clean, dry skin on your inner elbow.
2. 2Apply the product to the same spot for seven to ten days, mimicking how you would use it on your face.
3. 3Stop if the test area reacts. If there is no reaction by the end of the testing period, begin facial use following the directions for your exact product.

For Advanced Snail Radiance Dual Essence, COSRX tells you to pump an appropriate amount, mix the two essences, apply gently and tap into the skin. Its routine places essence before cream. The Dual Essence combines plumping and brightening care in one pump, which gives the bottle two jobs and a very long name.5

What should you do if your skin reacts?

Remove the suspected product from your routine. Note when symptoms started and which skin, hair and nail products you used, including occasional products. A dermatologist can examine the rash and arrange allergy patch testing when needed. The offending ingredient is not always obvious, so a reaction to a snail product does not automatically identify snail mucin as the cause.37

Mild contact dermatitis can clear within a few days after avoiding the trigger, while other cases take several weeks with treatment. Itching can improve before the visible rash disappears. Avoid scratching: broken skin can become infected.6

See a healthcare professional if the rash is severe, spreading, worsening, recurring or not improving. Also seek care if it affects your eyes or mouth, disrupts sleep or lasts longer than three weeks. Trouble breathing during an allergic reaction is an emergency: call 911 immediately.36
