Should you mix sugar with olive oil instead?

Sugar is used as a scrub in homemade facial care, and olive oil is used as a moisturizing ingredient. But replacing honey with oil does not solve the main problem with a lip scrub: the rubbing removes protective skin. A homemade scrub is still a scrub, even if its shopping list looks like breakfast.23

Lip skin is thinner and more sensitive than the skin elsewhere on your body, and lips have no oil glands. Flaking is not a reason to scrub harder. Peeling skin protects the new skin underneath while it prepares for exposure to dry air and other irritants. Let those flakes come away naturally rather than rubbing, biting or pulling them off.24

How to care for your lips without honey

  1. 1Choose plain white petroleum jelly or a fragrance free, nonirritating lip balm. For very dry, cracked lips, a thick ointment seals in water longer than waxes or oils.
  2. 2Apply the balm or ointment in the morning and whenever your lips feel dry during the day. Reapply after eating and drinking.
  3. 3Before going outdoors, apply a nonirritating lip balm with SPF 30 or higher. Zinc oxide or titanium oxide are suitable sunscreen ingredients for chapped lips.
  4. 4Reapply the SPF lip balm every two hours while outdoors, including in winter.
  5. 5Apply your plain balm or ointment again before bed. A bedroom humidifier can help if the air is dry, especially if you breathe through your mouth at night.

What should you expect?

Balm creates a seal that helps keep existing moisture from escaping; it does not need to remove flakes to do that job. Regular application should ease discomfort while your lips heal. Noticeable improvement usually takes two to three weeks, and severely chapped lips can take longer. That is a healing timeline, not a reason to add exfoliation while you wait.145

What should you leave out?

While lips are chapped, avoid fragrance and cinnamon, citrus, mint or peppermint flavoring. Menthol, camphor, eucalyptus, phenol and salicylic acid can also irritate dry lips. Burning, stinging or tingling means a product is irritating your lips, not working harder. Stop using that product.12

Never exfoliate open cuts, wounds or sunburned skin. General skincare guidance also calls for caution with exfoliation when using prescription retinoid creams, retinol or benzoyl peroxide, because these can make skin more sensitive or cause peeling. Do not try to scrub away medication related dryness; discuss persistent symptoms with your prescriber.46

How do you make a lip scrub with honey?

Honey holds moisture, but adding it does not make scrubbing the right approach for lips. A homemade facial scrub uses three tablespoons of honey mixed with one tablespoon of coarse brown sugar. Those quantities are for a face scrub, not lip directions. A facial recipe and a lip recipe are not interchangeable, even when both fit in the same mixing bowl. For dry lips, stick with protective balm or ointment instead.35

When should you get your lips checked?

See a healthcare professional if your lips worsen, bleed frequently despite home care, or do not improve after two to three weeks. Persistent cracking or scaling can have causes other than dry weather, including an allergic reaction or infection. A clinician can check the cause rather than treating every recurring patch as something that needs scrubbing.14
