Urea and hyaluronic acid are humectants, meaning they attract water to hydrate skin. Petrolatum and dimethicone help prevent moisture loss, while ceramides help keep moisture in. Both approaches make sense for dryness; counting ceramides is not a scoring system. A higher price does not mean a moisturizer works better.3

Which should you choose?

  • For one cream for your face and body, choose CeraVe. Its directions cover both areas, and its formula is fragrance free.
  • For dry to very dry skin, consider Eucerin Advanced Repair if you want a urea focused option. Match the cream, lotion or hand cream to the product you actually intend to use.
  • For very dry body skin, a cream is generally a better choice than a lotion. This is general dry skin guidance, not a result from testing these two products against each other.
  • For a face that dislikes rich textures, consider a lighter facial moisturizer instead. General guidance favors a gel or lotion for the face unless skin is very dry.

CeraVe is labeled noncomedogenic and accepted by the National Eczema Association. For sensitive skin or contact dermatitis, an itchy rash caused by irritation or allergy, test a new moisturizer before applying it widely. Fragrance free does not mean allergy free. If you have raw or irritated skin, ask a dermatologist which products to use.1356

How should you apply them?

  1. 1Wash with a gentle cleanser and warm, not hot, water. Keep baths or showers to five to ten minutes.
  2. 2Pat skin dry, leaving a little water on the surface. Apply moisturizer within three minutes to help trap that moisture.
  3. 3Follow your product's directions. CeraVe permits liberal application as often as needed, day or night; use the directions on your specific Eucerin pack.
  4. 4Reapply when skin feels dry and after washing your hands. Morning and bedtime are useful opportunities for regular moisturizing.
  5. 5During the day, protect exposed skin with broad spectrum, water resistant sunscreen rated SPF 30 or higher.

What should you expect, and when should you stop?

Moisturizers soften and smooth dry skin and help support its protective barrier. Neither product has a specified number of days for clearing dryness. Eucerin's 48 hour hydration claim is not a reason to skip application after washing; the tub does not run your calendar. Consistent daily use matters more than choosing a winner by its advertised hydration duration.235

Stop using a product that causes a skin reaction, and tell a dermatologist about burning, stinging or irritation. Get medical advice if dryness persists despite regular moisturizing, or if a rash blisters, keeps returning or causes discomfort. If you already have a prescribed dry skin treatment plan, follow it rather than replacing it with either cream.346
