Choose the serum for a facial treatment that sits beneath your moisturizer. Choose the body cream when you want targeted pigmentation care in a moisturizing texture. The body cream combines moisturizing and discoloration care in one product, which saves a body lotion from being hired for the same shift. The serum comparison here uses the listed version 2.0 formula; check your packaging for the current ingredients.12

What kind of discoloration are you treating?

Hyperpigmentation means increased skin color. Postinflammatory hyperpigmentation is darker pigment left after inflammation or injury has healed. Those patches appear where the original problem occurred and range from light brown to black. Anyone can develop them, but they are more common, more intense and longer lasting in darker skin tones. Sunlight can make the patches darker.45

Not every color change is excess pigment that a brightening product can address. Pale patches involve reduced pigment, while white patches can involve absent pigment. Dark patches can also come from infections, medications, benign pigmented lesions or other skin disorders. An unexplained patch needs assessment rather than being automatically treated as an old acne mark.5

If acne or eczema keeps creating new marks, treating the underlying condition comes first. Irritating skincare can also cause dark spots, so adding more products while your skin is irritated can work against the goal.3

What do the ingredients offer?

Good Molecules uses cetyl tranexamate mesylate, a tranexamic acid derivative, to target discoloration. The serum's niacinamide also targets uneven tone, dullness and texture. The body treatment adds acetyl glucosamine and an exfoliating ingredient, capryloyl salicylic acid, to help with discoloration and surface smoothness. Panthenol and linoleic acid contribute to its moisturizing and soothing role.12

Niacinamide and acetyl glucosamine are among topical options used for postinflammatory pigmentation. Such treatments have varying success, and significant improvement often requires a combination of treatments. Tranexamic acid also has a role in dermatologist managed melasma, but that prescription treatment is a separate decision from choosing a cosmetic serum containing a derivative.46

The listed prices are US$12 for the 30 ml serum and US$15 for the 120 ml body treatment, so the larger tube is not secretly a luxury upgrade. Pick by treatment area and texture rather than comparing the bottle prices alone.12

Which sunscreen belongs in the routine?

For dark spots, choose a tinted, water resistant sunscreen with broad spectrum protection, SPF 30 or higher and iron oxide. Iron oxide protects against visible light, which can contribute to pigmentation. SPF 50 or higher broad spectrum protection is advised for exposed postinflammatory patches. Reapply every two hours outdoors and after swimming or sweating, and wear a hat with a wide brim.34

How long does discoloration take to fade?

Once the cause has stopped, a spot a few shades darker than your natural skin color usually fades within 6 to 12 months. Deeper pigment can take years. Treatment can speed fading, but those are general pigmentation timelines, not a deadline for either Good Molecules product. Deep discoloration can look slate blue or gray, or much darker brown than the surrounding skin.3

What if the patches are melasma?

A dermatologist can distinguish melasma from other causes of uneven facial color and assess how deeply the pigment sits. Melasma can follow triggers such as pregnancy or medication and sometimes fades when the trigger ends, but it can also persist for years. There is no single best treatment: plans often combine sun protection with prescribed topical medicines, with procedures added for selected patients.6

Options include hydroquinone, combination prescription creams, azelaic acid and other topical treatments. For persistent melasma, a dermatologist can consider tranexamic acid applied to the skin or taken as a pill. Oral treatment requires a health assessment, including any history of blood clots. A melasma treatment plan usually takes 3 to 12 months to show results, and longstanding melasma can take longer.6

When should you stop or get help?

Stop the serum if irritation occurs, and stop any skincare product that burns or stings. Do not stop a prescribed medicine because you suspect it is causing pigmentation; ask the prescriber about alternatives. See a dermatologist if treatment is not giving you the results you want. Peels and laser treatments need careful selection because skin injury can worsen postinflammatory pigmentation.134
